The way I figure it is... if I can't tell right away... they win. LOL. If that Rei Ayanami chick is actually a dude... I will just have to learn how to be gay... simple as that. Awesomeness fact bumps up to 98.64%. What toys did she/he buy? I could tell by the toys...

Yah, yah... I know I am like the only person on Earth who thinks this cosplayer is awesome (I just noticed she has red eyes, just like Rei), but can anyone tell what toys she has in her bag... looks like box sets of some kind. If they are cool toys her awesomeness goes up, but if they are sucky toys then her awesomeness goes down. IMO her current awesomeness is at 92.67%.

I saw her roaming around at Comic-Con, definitely a chick. A anime-loving, uber-geek chick. But a chick nonetheless. Physically, not to my tastes, but she did have the red contacts and strutted her cosplay all three days I was there. This, in itself wins points in my book.

Thanks... And I agree. Any girl that can geek it out with as much enthusiasm as that wins points in my book.

Who cares! She could tell me she is dressed up as Cobra Commander and I would tell her she looks like a great Cobra Commander. Leave the cute girls alone and critique the man boys. There are reasons girls get into clubs for free. We need to encourage them damn it.

I'm certainly love people who dress up. I would have myself if my costume came together correctly. But that's my overall point. I couldn't come to Comic-Con, with everybody from fanboys to the press taking pictures, half-assed dressed. It just would look right. And I wouldn't have represented those who do put lots of time, effort, and money into cosplay correctly. In short, I'd come off looking like a cheap poser. So I chose not to. And yes, there's a reason why girls get into clubs free (dressed up or not). Because drooling man-boys will follow hoping to get some action with them. They get free drinks because the bar knows these same man-boys will purchase enough to give them the "liquid courage" to actually approach those girls. But here's the deal with cosplay, you do it for the attention. So when you dress up, you immediately are asking for people to stop, look, and let you know how you did. Hell, if I put the effort into it, I'd want people to let me know where I could have done better.

But I am not the one that is sensitive. True if one dresses up you are opening yourself to be seen but to be scrutinized one is not. Any effort is more effort than 99% of the people who went to the con in a black or white t-shirt, shorts or jeans, and flip-flops. You can argue anymore that going as a Stormtrooper is half ass because everyone has seen that done that. You put on a suit wala! People routinely go as the same person every year (drunken Bobba Fett comes to mind) but yet they have to wear the outfit throughout the convention during long periods of time. They put no effort into "ramping" up their outfit but they do it anyway. The reason why I joked about the cute girls is that unfortunately women have a tendency to have a thin skin when it comes to being criticized. Men just wash off the critique with a grunt or two and come back next year as the guy in the underwear. Ego can be a beautiful but blinding quality. Comic-Con or any like minded convention is a place where nerds of all breeds can come out and just be themselves without the feeling of recourse at a moment's notice. The effort alone is worth a thank you for the picture and have a nice day. Period.

Enough of the debating whether or not people should be dressed up for cosplay - Shut the F up and look at the pretty pictures. |
