Hey guys,
I'm starting up my own photography business soon and need to build my own webpage... I'm very reticent on subbing it out to someone to create for me since I want to be in control of the design and looks of it, but I have little to no technical knowledge of such things. I know we have a lot of tech-savvy guys out here and probably a bunch of web-designers if I'm not too mistaken. At the very least, a number of guys who have at least created a website for themselves *ahem, the owners of this site, I'm looking at you too!* So can anyone advise if it's best to go through GoDaddy and get my domain name and hosting services from/through them? What do costs look like to renew the domain registration after the initial year/2-year deal? Are their templates pretty user friendly without being overtly generic? anyone else with opinions on the matter or advice, I would love to hear it. This is the part that has worried me the most about starting up my own business... |

I know it sounds really cheesy... But set yourself up a blog or a MySpace page for your company. Most of these use basic HTML in the customizing designs. This is why thousands of teenagers are able to bling up theirs. And the traffic alone will beat anything you can get with your own page to start. You can buy the domain name for cheap and places like Go Daddy allow you to link the name to any site. During this time, you can learn the basics of HTML design which will help you design a better website on your own.

My site's domain is through godaddy, I think it's like $10 a year (maybe less, I don't really remember right now)
I can't help with the techie aspects though as a friend of mine made the site (I don't think much was done with that either since it's a coppermine gallery) I just created the header image and upload pictures |

Kitty's Pryde domain name is through a service called 1and1 and is about 9 a year. We didn't have to design a webpage since we're forum based and there's a ton of free forums to use out there.

I have purchased all of my sites and have all of my hosting with GoDaddy. Domain is like $10ish/yr. Hosting is $7/mo. That includes email and SQL services. There are a couple of free forum engines - PHBPP comes to mind. Then there are free blogging software. I like Wordpress, but I had some tool flame me for PHPBB and WP being too common. Security wise, Joomla is just about as worthless as WP, but alas, what do I know. Do your research and have fun!
