Need some advice on Nextel Phone service, and ONLY on the PHONE end of Nextel service, NOT the radio / direct connect end of it.
For those who have or use Nextel PHONE service, what is the quality of their service? Trouble connecting, can't hear, dropped calls, ect?? Reason I ask is I know previously this was an issue w/ Nextel, while the radio / direct connect end of worked great. Not interested in hearing about other carriers or other services or even talking about the radio / direct connect end of it, I just need to know if their PHONE service is ok / fixed or not. Thanks!

I've been a Nextel customer since before they merged with Sprint. I even was a Sales Manager for a store (my first job after retiring from the Navy).
What is it that you're asking? Signal strength? Depends on the technology of your phone. Original Nextel phones with the PTT radio use GSM technology. It's a different carrier signal than the more widely used CDMA technology. The telephone signal sorta "piggy-backs" the radio wave making it somewhat weaker when you're not in direct tower/satellite range. If you've ever had satellite TV, it's the same concept as why all telcom sat dishes point the same direction. If you're using an iDen model phone, you're on GSM. CDMA works a bit differently and is also standard on many newer phones. This works more like a wi-fi network where there are signal routers and your technology picks up the closest signal.

There phone service sucks. I have used Nextel for years while working in the trades and it has always sucked. I just convinced my current employer to switch to verizon. Better reception, services and cheaper.

Phones will all be brand NEW (three of them).
My new employer has given me a new Sprint Nextel Motorola for work use. I have been looking for some time to end my contract w/ my current carrier, and wanted to get my family on Nextels so we could all use the radio feature. NOT so save money rather than using cells, but for the ease of the PTT / radio feature. Plus I can dump one phone we have now, and only go to three on my personal contract. So the newer ones are better huh? I had used a Nextel previous to this, but only the radio end of it. I still have my current cell from my private contract, but I'd like to dump it, use the work phone / radio totally, and get the family three Nextels. My old lady's phone is a POS anyway, as is both of my parent's also. All of them need to upgrade and I can dump mine and use the work one. LMK, thanks -

ESG2145 - The Push-to-talk feature is definitely a great one. Especially as a work phone. Before I had a Nextel, I had an old Sprint PCS phone. Even then, the connectivity was awesome. Just keep in mind what I said about GSM technology vs. CDMA technology. Look at your phone manual (or ask the rep) and have them explain it to you which signal your phone runs on.

Ok, so out of the two it's the CDMA I am after vs. the GSM right?
Thanks -
