I just need a phone that calls people. I've honestly never been in a situation where I needed internets while on the go. I've already got a GPS. I've already got a camera. I've already got an iPod.
Right now, I have a simple phone with a grandfathered account originally with Alltel, now with Verizon. $25.99 a month unlimited calls. The plan I have hasn't even been offered in years. My phone is web capable but I hardly have ever used it. I text on rare occasions. The camera gets used on occasion. I mainly just use it to call people, and it works like a charm. A smartphone isn't something I'd even consider. |

I'm like you, I don't have a smart phone and I'm still struggling to stay with a simplistic phone that only makes calls, that said,Two things to look for:
Make sure the "phone" has actual buttons. Think about the credit card scanners at stores now, how often do you have to really press down hard to get the thing to realise your hitting a "button" on it's interface? Don't get anything Motorola. (Maybe the following issue is fixed in newer models, maybe not) My wife upgraded to a Motorola about a year ago. The other day everytime she put her phone on the charger it would say "Unauthorized Charger" (This is the same one that came with the phone and she's never used anything else than the two chargers that came with the phone) Neither charger would work now because of something dealing with the port you plug it into and the phone is no longer under warranty. She can upgrade to a new phone in November though. Luckally her mom had a phone she wasn't using anymore and we were able to get her info switched to it. BTW, I've had a Samsung phone whose biggest feature is a camera for about 3 + years now with no problems, my wife's previous phone which held up for 4+ years until the hinge broke? yep, it was a Samsung. The phone places biggest thing these days seems to be upgrades, they want you to get a phone and change it out for a newer one almost every year or two. I can only assume this is because if you keep it for a few years, you'll find out what a piece of trash most of them are |

I have a BlackBerry through Sprint, with a nice plan (nicer since I get a company discount lol), that doesnt have many minutes, but I dont even use them. I text, email, and IM more than anything, so the data plan is gravy. And it's so easy to use.
I cant have anything touchscreen since they dont seem to read my fingertips (I sold my soul to Milhouse), and I'm sick of iPhones, and Droids cause headaches (I cant even call my brother down the street cuz his doesnt work half the time). But like people here have said, look aroung yourself for what you need & want. Different people have different needs.

Well 25.99 for unlimited calls is incredible. But that doesn't meanyou can't upgrade hardware! Corndog seems happy with just a phone.
Do you need additional functionality?? If not don't worry. I would venture to say, that if you have an intuitive user friendly like the droid iPhone etc... You will start using those features. My iPhone unintentionally has replaced my alarm clock, iPod, pager, cellphone. I keep movies for the kids on it. (think kids waiting in line, or that impossibly slow waiter taking forever with your check..if you have kids you'll understand!) I've gone toy hunting in Chicago flawlessly hit 3 targets 2trus and a kmart using the phone's gps . It told me exactly which trains to take, when to change to the bus line. They are usually more expensive to operate monthly. If you want to minimize cost, stay with your current carrier, and read the rviews on thecurrent models of phone they offer. Good luck!!! |

I just got my first Smartphone yesterday, the new Droid X and already I can't imagine what I would do without it. It's a whole different world.
For some folks I can understand the hesitation, but for someone like me, who loves being as connected as possible to whatever is going on, this device is an absolute dream come true. I can be in my garage working on reviews, while still chatting on email, texting, using Facebook, etc... I'm already fully in love with my Droid, and am already mentally working my budget around having a Smartphone for the rest of my life. Justin |

I'm the biggest cell phone whore I like being able to whip out the shiniest, loudest piece of technology in the room. I won't be a dumbass about it though. I always try to get my stuff at a discount, or through some form of deal.
I'm on the go, all day. Literally I'm either at work, with my son, or away from the house. So I use my phone for actual calls about 3% of the time. The rest it's my main source of email, web, facebook, navigation, music, books, gaming. I currently have a Samsung Moment, which is great, but I'm moving up to an EVO4 on Monday. I' with Sprint, and they just aren't updating the moment fast enough. I don't have an Iphone, but I do have an Itouch that I received as a gift from my job for a project I worked on.

If you don't have a use for all the features, bells and whistles that came with a smart-phone then why bother with one.
I have a Palm Pre because I need to be able to check e-mail on the road, and I've found that the GPS directions are really useful. But if I didn't need those feature for work related stuff I would have a simple no frills phone. Don't get what you don't need. |

They have no merits, my 10 bosses, can get hold of me 24 hours 7 days a week. 3 different ways. I get in trouble if I let it go to vioce mail because its always an emergency.
I miss pre cell phone days when your work day ended at 5pm. |
