To make money. That is their only motivation. When sales go down, they like to "restart" and sell #1's. When that stops working, they try to get nostalgic and go the other way. And when you run out of money, they raise the price. If you're lucky they all end up in a discount bin.

Marvel eventually realized that it is one thing to hold a book in your hand and you are told that even though your book says number "1" that the book has really been published monthly since 1962. To say that you are holding issue 600+ puts a longevity or history behind it. It promotes brand recognition by exclaiming "We have been around for years." Incidentally, one comic book company had a completely different manner in numbering their books during their early period. Every book that they published was sequentially numbered. For instance, if Marvel had done things this way it might look like this: Just an example not dated specifically Marvel Comics # 1 = Fantastic Four #1 (January) Marvel Comics # 2 = Fantastic Four #2 (February) Marvel Comics # 3 = Hulk #1 (February) Marvel Comics # 4 = Daredevil #1 (February) Marvel Comics # 5 = Fantastic Four #3 (March) Marvel Comics # 6 = Hulk #2 (March) Marvel Comics # 7 = Daredevil #2 (March) The running total was not the specific issue but how many different issues that company had published. |
