sorry if someone has done this topic already but while i was at target today i saw a soldier in unusual fatigues i asked him what kind of uniform he had on and thought he was going to tell me he was a s.w.a.t officer, but he said that he was wearing the new navel uniform.he also explaind that the navy has also changed the dress uniform .
so my question is is how do you guys feel about the classic look of the navy jumping into the modern age Last edited by jpnX; 02-02-2011 at 07:14 PM.. |

As a former Marine, I think, as the old saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But no matter how hard they try, they'll never be Marines.

They were talking about Navy digital cammies for a LONG long time, and started the testing phase in 2005, about a year and a half before I got out. A lot of commands still haven't made the transition to them just yet. The reasons for a switch to cammies are many and varied, and include everything from "cammies look cool and we want to wear them too" to "we have too many gawddam uniforms." The latter is actually pretty true...when I was still active, I had dress whites, dress blues, working whites, working blues, utilities, woodland cammies, and coveralls. I owned something like 4 or 5 sets of utilities and something like 10 sets of coveralls (since we wore those two uniforms the most, with coveralls being uniform of the day 99.9% of the time for shipboard personnel...). The cammies were (I don't know if this remained true, since I got out in 07) supposed to replace utilities, coveralls, woodland camo, working blues, and working whites. As to the usefulness of camo on a ship, well, if you get gray or white (or blue, but blue doesn't get used much on ships) paint on your blue/gray/white digital cammies, it'll be harder to see. This is actually a pretty valid point since a good portion of the average workday on a ship consists of scraping/grinding/stripping and reapplying paint, and LPOs, Chiefs, and various other Khaki-wearing types don't like sailors showing up to muster with uniforms stained with paint. If you can't see it, however, then it doesn't really matter. I guess a final point in their favor is that people tend to associate personnel in camo as distinctly military - a lot of Navy working uniforms make us look like gas station attendants, so this is a good change. Now you know. |

It's suppose to hide the dirt and grime that can get picked up from all the nooks and crannies on a boat.
