I was thinking about this the other day. I love going to toy shows and saving some $$ and buying vintage Joes etc. I also like seeing some HTF figures that I wasn't able to find in stores, but never like seeing the $40 and up price tag on them. I thought it would really suck if one day Toys R Us met the same fate as Hill's, Gold Circle, Children's Palace, KB Toys, Circus World etc.
I know that at times Toys R Us can get frustrating by having the same old peg warmers, but sometimes you can hit the jackpot. Take for example the Tanker who found the POC vehicles. I few years back I went into my local Toys R Us and picked up the Legion of Doom and Hart Foundation 2 pack. Then a few weeks later they were gone and most websites had them for like $75 or more. I really enjoy going into toy stores/ toy departments and get to take a look at the figures in person and not behind a computer screen. So I am just wondering how many collectors would not be sad if toy stores/toy departments closed up show and the only way to get figures would be online and toy shows. IMO it is fun when you tracking a figure down and find it in a store. CS SE and white coat Rex had me searching for months, and when I finally found one on the pegs it was a great victory. I feel the fun of collecting and toy hunting is not the same when you order one off a website. Just my opinion. |

I'm not so certain finding vehicles earlier than expected that aren't going to be hard to find at all qualifies as hitting the jackpot.

I worked at Tower Records for 3 years. A few years after I left, Tower went under, followed by Virgin, etc. I hear Best Buy is next on the chopping block. And I've heard rumors about Border's as well. They'll all end up online like Tower did. And people miss when they could walk around a music store and browse and actually shop in person.
Now a toy store is obviously different. but TRU is one of the last one's standing. the only benefits to everything becoming an on-line experience is it forces stores to create a better on-line shopping experience. we've all had things get canceled in our orders... or bumped out etc... that wouldn't fly if it was their main source of sales. that and overnight shipping heheh. but to not be able to have something the day you want it... that's horrible. I have to buy all of my music on line now because the only stores that carry it are specialty stores that literally mark a cd up by like $20 and vinyl up by $5 or $10. I think we'd all get a lot more of what we're looking for if it went on-line and toy show etc... but we'd never get it when we wanted it. and that's not fun at all. especially if you're in the need of fodder or troops etc.

WOW! Circus World, now that place brings back memories. I do so miss KB's though. I loved finding past-season toys there for a fraction of their retail.

The hunt is half of the fun.
With 25th/ME and now POC, I'll normally only buy a case online to make sure I have all of them, carded, and in good condition. Then, I hit the stores for the ones I want to open. Lord knows how much gas I've wasted and have yet to waste |

True, I see your point. Let me clarify. I've read on here that people have bought figures off ebay and other online sites months before hitting shelves. I would rather pay the $24.99 in a store then pay double or triple online. I remember seeing CS SE on ebay for $40 +. The Spiderman President Obama comic that I bought 2 of, was going for $200+ on ebay. I much rather enjoyed going into the comic store and picking up a copy and looking at the conditon then order it offline and worry about the condition not being that great.

But won't somebody think of the children? A world without toy stores... terrible. Unfortunately, a lot of the ones that went under recently were overpriced, so that's sort of an indicator. TRU is median, but they also have Babys'R'Us. I saw a truck this morning on the way to work, and it had a trailer with TRU on the side with Kids'R'Us under it. Never heard of Kids'R'Us.

To put this in perspective, as of 2008 there was nearly 3500 Wal-Marts in the US. There are over 1700 Targets and nearly 600 TRUs. How is an independent music, movie, toy, etc. type store suppose to compete price and volume wise with these numbers? These companies have the buying power of small countries. That's why your independent music dealer is selling cds for $15+. They're not getting 10+ copies x 3,500 stores. When you have that kind of purchasing power, you can dictate what you pay.

I always try to shop at Toys R Us for birthday and Christmas gifts just to try and help the store stay alive. It's sad though that their action figure selection has been lacking over the last few years.
I don't understand why they didn't buy up some of the Joe and Star Wars figures from Hasbro instead of letting it go to all of these close out stores. They really need to have a close out section in their stores instead of looking into grocery items. |
