I think there will always be a toy department. Now, if there will always be an action figure aisle, that's another matter. I think as long as retail stores exist, you'll be able to find 'kiddie' toys, but I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that action figures will someday be sold through the net. But, that would likely also mean the eventual end of mass production action figures at anywhere close to the outrageous prices we're seeing on the aisle these days. A nice medium would be the collector's market going on-line. The retail versions of action figure lines could drop in quality, while the standards collectors demand would be better served through on-line scalpers that pose as legitimate retail outlets.

If they did, pastry would be the only reason left for me to leave my house. I don't think they ever will though, because children require instant gratification and are the main consumers of toys. |

Sorry Gyre but I have to pick on this one statement. Specialty and independent music stores (few and far between anymore) are in the same boat as independent toy sellers. Neither is capable of carrying the amount of product or has the sheer number of stores to compete with WM and Target when it comes to prices.
To put this in perspective, as of 2008 there was nearly 3500 Wal-Marts in the US. There are over 1700 Targets and nearly 600 TRUs. How is an independent music, movie, toy, etc. type store suppose to compete price and volume wise with these numbers? These companies have the buying power of small countries. That's why your independent music dealer is selling cds for $15+. They're not getting 10+ copies x 3,500 stores. When you have that kind of purchasing power, you can dictate what you pay. I won't argue that point. But with Tower I had an option. Tower would at least get some of the independent stuff and more obscure stuff than say Virgin or Best Buy. I'm all for supporting independent stores... but I prefer on-line independent stores. like boomkat.

I remember when Lionel Toy Playworld and Tons-O-Toys closed. They were two of our biggest toy stores in the '80s. Then KB Toys closed sometime in the last 4 years and one of the only two ToysRUs closed about 2 years ago. Now there is only one toy store that carries figures and an OVER-PRICED comic shop to hunt for figures. It sucks!

IMO the greatest thing about wandering through a real toy store IMO is the panoramic view of all the toys and simply the ambience of it all... sort of like the difference between watching a baseball game on tv and actually being there.
If you shop online most times all you will get are generic stock pictures or a blurry lo-res photo of the toy you are seeking. Plus, online you pretty much know exactly what you are going to get... there are no surprises to find, no impulses buys... no thrill... and the worst... no instant gratification from the item you just bought. I would be very worried about TRU going out of business except for the fact that their Babies R' Us division seems to be doing REALLY well so maybe they can help pick up the slack.
