Good deal PV - I am about to head out for a run myself. I can remember when I could barely run a mile, let alone do it in less than 10 minutes.
You should work yourself up and sign up for a 5K. I say it's better to go slower and longer than fast and short. Better yet mix it up |

So heres a good question on this, what is the best way to get back into running period? I, like you PV, have never been good at cardio much less getting off my ass and just going running was never a runner still not a runner. I hate it, I always end up getting mega tired, not hitting my goal or worse, I get that horrid ithcing in my legs and nothing i have ever done in the past has ever helped with that so I dread getting to that level. So many turn offs+excuses I know, but I also know I have to get back into shape, i cant just keep going without some execrise but I just loathe running as I never find a way to get into and stick with it.
I figured i would start out by just speed walking around a track or something and maybe getting a bike again and just ridiing all over to break back into it (I cant just sit in an air conditioned gym on a treadmill that is too boring for me), but others just say just go run...but what is a good way to do that so you don't set yourself up to fail? This has been a stubmling block for me for to long.. |

I used to get the stitch after running around the block when I started. I found the trick is to take it slow at first, and don't overdo it. Set up a course for yourself, like a 1 or 2 mile stretch. Stretch and warm up first then go out at a light pace. If you feel you can't run anymore, walk the rest of it. But finish the distance. Next time you go out try to run further until you run the whole way. Then either extend the run or work on upping the pace, or both.
stay hydrated **the day prior, is when you really need to drink** but everyday really, take your body weight say 220, drink half that in ounces of water=110. and finaly, dont diet--rather modify your eating habbits!!! eat 300-400 calories 5-6 times a day is waaaaaay better for you than 3 big meals. eat carbs in the morning and dont eat anything after 18-1900. |

I once did 2 miles in 10:04. The only problem was it was a 5 mile race and prior to that my best 2-mile time was 10:30.
Man, did I ever hit the wall on that 4th mile. Legs turned Jell-O and all. I finished 48th out of 50 runners. I think I was actually the last runner to cross the finish line. That was the last time I tried to keep up with those big dog NCAA runners.

Great job PV!! Like you, I've never been much of a runner, but last year I got into it and I've kept it up to some extent. I strive to just do better than a 10 minute mile, which was always difficult for me to do, so if I run a mile under 10 minutes, I feel like I've accomplished something.
As for getting started running, I just started walking first. Then I would run for a quarter mile, then add a little the next day, and then in 3 days or so I was up to a half mile. Start slow -- you don't have to run a mile in 10 minutes, but it's a good goal to shoot for.
