US Army Infantry, from 2004 - 2009. Two deployments to Iraq, and I can't say those were the worst times. Infantry garrison sucks - most people go AWOL because of the treatment and lifestyle there than down range. It's extreme "high school" - bullying, popularity contests, backstabbing and field trips. I went in expecting a professional atmosphere and ended up with precautionary measures for the inept and retarded (two hours early for a 6 AM formation because some slackers couldn't make it on time) or unofficial punishments meted out for personal offenses (Nothing beats a smoke session because some NCO thinks you might have been disrespecting him in your THOUGHTS).
Luckily I avoided alot of the BS, but you can't escape it all. I made some of the best friends I'll ever have there, and though I would never ever do it again, I can't say I'd UN-do it if I could. Tom

When I was in college, I worked for this company called RGIS.
They did physical inventory of retail stores and grocery stores. We'd go in, after or before hours, and physically count and scan (UPC barcodes) all the items in the store. Would take hours. A store like Sears, there would be a crew of a 3 or 4 dozen of us all going to town. Was supposed to be just a part time job, but I ended up being a Team Leader (running crews and stores of my own). What made it great was the friends, most of who I still have to this day and it's been probably about 10 years since worked there. I met one of my best friends there, lots of hook-ups, and had TONS of parties and good times with the people from that job.

At least with another MOS you can study your job, have a senior NCO show you something new about it, and there's no need to constantly prove yourself. Most of our NCOs felt it was their DUTY to fuck lower enlisted up - not to teach them a lesson or toughen them up, but because it made them laugh. If I looked at any of the other companies in my battalion, I was sure to see some 18 year old kid, covered in mud, being made to do mountain climbers because he might've asked a question or not known the what the "R" in some McDonalds-Corporation-of-a-f****ing-acronym meant. Infantry, most of our time is spent either on stupid details, being tormented by NCOs, 24 hour duty then told to come in that following morning because they "didn't know" there was a no-excuses 100% accountability formation that was on the battle calendar for two months... Ah, the infantry. How I DON'T miss you. XD Tom

Yeah, but I have to say Infantry has it the worst.

Ah, the infantry. How I DON'T miss you. XD Tom But even when I was lowly non-designated (meaning no AIT *or A-School as we called it*), my official job was bilge wiper. I had an E-6 who simply didn't like me. At all. He made it his personal mission to make sure that I didn't advance, that I did all the shit work, and ensured that I didn't enjoy any of my experience in the Navy. He would "counsel" me regularly. But it was more of talking down. A reminder of how much of a screw-up I was. When I would ask for advice to "improve" my performance, he assumed I was being a smart-ass and reprimand me (definitely not teach me). So anyway, I'm not trying to dumb down your experience. If anything, I'm saying that I share it with you.

Hahah! Oh man, Joe - believe me, I can relate. I apologize if I came of like 'Army Infantry has it the sh*tiest out of EVERYONE EVER' XD I guess I'm just a bit jealous of mechanics who repaired vehicles, medics trained on CPR and hell, even cooks prepared food while I was being made to climb a rope because Pvt Rowe was caught drinking in the barracks ; )
Granted, we'd treat those skilled people like trash (As you described above) but I think alot of it was our jealousy that they weren't running the obstacle course ten minutes to COB. Frankly, I LOVED deploying... it was a vacation from that nonsense. Tom

Right out of High School, got a job at a grocery store (Krogers) as a bag boy and later promoted up to a cashier. The work was tedious and the days lasted forever sometimes, but when it was slow and we could escape to the stock room, it was awesome.
Just a few of the joys we got away with there: * Grabbing cookie dough off the shelf, eating most of it, and then placing it in the "damaged" cart for credit. * Crushing stuff in the cardboard box bailing machine * BSing with the lesbian couple who worked in the dairy section. * Getting cool promotional stuff from the liquor store * Cat food hockey... 'nuff said * Scanning items to pump out instant dollar instore coupons, reversing the transaction, and using the coupons to buy stuff out of the non-foods section. This ended up getting about half of us baggers/cashiers fired in one fell swoop. Looking back, I'm surprised we didn't get canned sooner. Good times |

My last job. The pay sucked but it was the first and still only job where I like and had respect for everyone there (aside from the short time in the marines).
On slow days we'd straight up watch movies or play WoW. *sigh* it was hard leaving, but double what i was making is a good incentive.

Yes,mine was whenever I worked retail,TJ maxx,Target and Home Depot was all crappy jobs where I was overworked, underpaid and unappreciated but socially they we're all fun. Each job especially Target was like highschool for me,so many young attractive women, alot who showed interest in me and so many cool guys that I had alot in common with. We use to have so much fun in those stockrooms.
Now I work in the insulation/bricklaying field and do temp warehouse jobs, the pay is great but Im forced to work with people I have nothing in common with. Most of the times I just stay to myself at work and only talk to people when its needed. Theres no cute girls and I work with a bunch of old grumpy, country, sometimes racist half wits. Even the younger people I work with is all country and old acting. I like talking about cool stuff like movies, music and sports etc,all most of them seem to talk about is hookers, beating their wives, getting drunk and gay shit. |
