Haha...well 1st of all, I have the flatest feet in the world, literally ZERO arch...to make it even more awesome, like 2 or 3 years ago I decided to play around with an asphalt tamper...but not before I decided to switch from my steel toe work boots to my Livestrong Nike's........BAM!!
Didn't break anything, but it's never been right since. I get cortizone shots every few months...and generally wear custom made orthodics. Lately, I've been on the "less is more" kick--walk/run barefoot to naturally build muscle in your feet...or wear a minimal sneaker. So I did..I got a few pairs of those Nike "free flex" or whatever...the 1st day it sucked, after that everyday I can go a bit longer, lower back pain tolerance getting higher, getting faster and no real pain in my feet without wearing the orthodics. Orthodics are great for walking or work...but I swear they suck to run in--heavy, sometimes I "land" funny and they shift a bit. Anyway, yeah..generally every day I wake up and limp to for a little while, once blood gets going in my right foot it's all good. Another thing is this...because of the flat feet--especially the "flattend" right one, when I walk...my foot would go out like a duck. I spent YEARS walking in the mirror to correct this because I HATED the way I looked when I ran....after about 2 years of being concious of how my foot was landing...my foot never goes out anymore....BUT sometimes I notice when I'm running and getting around the 7 or 8 mph mark on the treadmill, that knee will move inwards....I'm wondering if a knee brace will keep me "in alignment". Take three Advil. Find yourself a large plastic ziplock bag. Fill said bag three quarters of the way with ice. And then put the ice bag. Right. On. Your mangina! Or you could just man up! |

Back to the barefoot thing though...I have been running in Shox and all this crap that looks bangin' but in comparison to these sneaks that are basically mesh and rubber...holy sh*t! World of difference...after the 1st days I got used to how different they felt...time to stock up on these. I actually might head to a 3rd world country and play barefoot soccer in an alley somewhere....it's been workin' for those cats basically forever! |

Bad positioning of feet means you're also forcing your spine. Your shins hurts probably cos your weight is too much and you're putting too much pressure on your heels. You might want to work out the legs first, then start running.

I used to get shin splints all the time, then I started consciously running on the balls of my feet rather than the heels and it took a lot of strain off my shins and knees. But my calves took a beating. Not too bad a thing because they started growing.
