So last week I went to Wal-Mart just to see if I could find some of the new IM figures like Whiplash. Well I noticed this guy holding a Hot Wheels box while a Photo lab employee was taking the cars out and putting them on the pegs.
After the photo lab employee emptied a box, the HW collector would say "Nope, no green stripe in this box. Open another." So after he asked this photo lab employee to open 4 boxes of Stupid HW looking for some dumb green stripe crap, a "Zone Supervisor" walks over and says "Oh hey there, let me run in the back and bring out the other cases of HW for you." WTF!!! How come Any other time you ask a WM employee if they have any figures in the back you get the "if it's not on the shelf we don't have any in the back BS." There was 2,000 HW on the pegs. Why didn't this guy get the same story. So after 20 minutes of the "Zone Supervisor" and photo lab employee open up boxes of HW he left. So I went up and asked the photo lab employee if they hadd any IM figures in the back. Of course I got the "We have a bunch of IM figures on the peg, nothing in the back." I call BBBBBBBSSSSSSSS. Wal-Mart please quit only catering to the Hot Wheels collectors demands. When they say go in the back and bring out some cases it's like WM employees are zombies and must do what the HW collectors ask. Long story short, no new IM figures although there are probably several cases sitting right next to the spot where the HW cases were in the back room. |

Well, that guy is probably well-connected to the managerial staff of that particular Walmart, because 99 times out of 100, this would never happen. I think a lot of stores now have policies against this kind of thing. What's on the shelves are what's available fro purchase, until the next time they're restocked. So I doubt it's the case of Walmart catering to Hot Wheel collectors; it's more that you need a friend on the "inside." Which is how the world really works. It's who you know...

Those Hot Wheel collectors are usually dangerous hillbilly meth addicts. Wal-Mart employees have probably just been instructed to meet all of their demands for the sake of safety. If you have a mullet and a Dale Earnhardt T-shirt on they will do what ever you say.

I've noticed the phenomina too at K-Marts as well. I think HW avoided the crazed collector stigma that sticks to action figure collectors. Cars are also a universal love, and most auto repair/restoration shops have little HW and MB toys all over-the there is no weirdness about adults.
I CAN guarentee you these people get laughed at the same as us after they leave. Quote:

My cousin is a huge collector of all kinds of toys, including Hot Wheels, but action figures as well. I don't know where he gets the money from, because he must spend at least $1K a month easy. But he makes his rounds, Walmart, Target, TRU, and he knows those people, so he gets the run of the stock room, basically.

If somone knows you or knows your going to spend big bucks they are more inclined to help...
I get this treatment at the local comic shop and they help me as much as possible and I occasionally get the store discount =) As for big stores you just have to be nice and come back like 2-3 times a week so people get to know you. Heck strike up a conversation with people about toys. If they look at you weird then move on to the next one. Most people work in the toy departments because they like toys. Find a comon ground with somone and your in. People are generally more sympathetic to people like themselves. For all you know all the guys looking through the HW boxes all collect the stuff themselves... |

If the guy was wearing this then there was no stopping him. It's best to just stay out of his way.

I can attest, as someone who works at Walf***, that this was something out of the ordinary. We seriously don't keep anything extra in the back unless the shelves are completely full and a box came in anyway. This does happen with HW, but most people who work in toys know all about the "green stripe" crap. People ask me all the time for stuff in the back and think I'm lying, but a good store will be keeping track of their merchandise so as not to clog up the backroom. Unless it was something special (like we got Toy Story 3 garbage about a month in advance) then you really would have to keep checking because we'd have no clue when more would come in.
