My girlfriend had hers taken out last fall. She had had pain for years before it was properly diagnosed. Part of the problem was she had so many gall stones you couldn't see her gall bladder on an ultrasound because it was full. When they took it out the surgery took an extra hour because there were so many more than they expected - it was a full 8lbs!
The surgery itself though is relatively simple. My only real recommendation is stay away from main hospitals where they do a lot of teaching. It's not about the quality of the surgery itself, it's about the service you'll get at the hospital. My girlfriend went to Presbyterian in Pittsburgh and they overbooked the entire day, got her information wrong and had her show up at 7 am to prep for a surgery that was scheduled for 1pm and didn't start until 2:30 because of the abundance of surgeries scheduled. They compensated her by saying they were sorry and gave me a $5 voucher for the cafeteria. Then when she was done they didn't have a place for her to recover so while she was under she remained in the OR for a while. Then when they did move her to recovery she was in a room with over a dozen patients while she was waking up in pain and only 1 nurse assigned to the room to catch up on everyone so she was basically awake for over an hour (and cursing like a sailor) before she got some proper meds. Recovery was quick though. She was on her feet within a week. Also everyone reacts differently, but I've had 3 other friends have theirs removed as well and everyone's diet has had to change - regardless of what the doctors tell you. So surgery - not bad and nothing to worry about. Recovery - you'll be up and about within a week. Hospital service - that's where you worry. Also it helps to know how you react to pain killers. One kind, she sleeps like a rock. Another kind, she has terrible hallucinations that freak me out when she describes them when they've worn off. It's better to know rather than wonder about your pain killers for a day in a twisted psychotic haze. |

At least get a discount on the procedure...ya' know?
But of course, you go to a big hospital, probably government funded, or a board full of money grubbing asshats who look to cut their costs to pay for their 5 vacations a month to the bahamas...yesh. I head the Hospital Caf DOES have good tunafish sammiches though...

Initially we both really wanted to complain, but at such a big hospital (endowment plus fundraising plus tuition plus private donations etc.) we knew what we would get - the runaround then circular logic and then an apology and that's that. So in the end we figured it wasn't worth the fight. In the end though that voucher did do some good - I don't know about the tuna, but they made a mean burger

The only advice for surgery I will give is this. Never, never, nevernevernevernever EVER. Watch the procedure on YouTube.
That is all. Well beyond good luck and I'm sure everything will be fine.
