My wife chose not to get hers till she was eighteen, and because of my poor behavior in high school mine was suspended until I was eighteen, however I didn't get mine until I was twenty. We are not perfect drivers but neither of us have at fault accidents on our records. However if I did start driving when I was a teen it would not have been good. I was far to irresponsible.

^THIS^ right here, is the problem. Somehow, somewhere, some people seemed to forget that your job as a parent isn't to make your kids happy. It's to help them grow up into functioning, decent members of society. She shouldn't be happy, she f'ed up some kids life, she should think about that every day she has to walk to school, or sit home on a friday night for the next year because she was a careless a-hole. That way, she won't do it again.

This is one of my hotbutton topics.
I don't have any hard data to back this up, but I would say more people are killed annually in this country alone by car crashes than people are killed by guns in the entire world in the same amount of time. And yet guns remain the most pressing concern for lawmakers and lobbyists in the US. The majority of LEGAL gun owners have taken numerous safety classes to learn the proper use and handling of their firearms. And yet, nobody thinks twice about giving a license to anyone that can answer a multiple choice test and drive around the block. Automobiles are infinitely more dangerous than guns - which would you rather trying to avoid? A round smaller than a human thumb flying through the air at, say 400 m/s? Or a wall of steel and plastic coming at you at 45 mph? And to say nothing of the average motor vehicle operator's ignorance of the machine they are in control of. It blows my mind how many people just get in their vehicle and go the second it's running. I always perform a quick visual inspection of my car before I go. I make sure I check things such as oil, tires, belts and battery terminals as frequently as I can remember. Especially since all my cars have been beaters - but for the most part have rarely let me down. But these factors coupled with the modern distractions of cellphones, GPS, iPods and on and on have made the roads in this country the most dangerous places a person can be. Not to mention when you think about how many are driving unlicensed or drunk or high or tired or too old or too inexperienced... My girlfriend told me the other morning the police had pulled someone over in the McDonalds parking lot across from Starbucks where she works to give a sobriety test to someone - at 9 in the morning! And they fell over! But that's okay, guns are way more dangerous. The FBI has even released data stating that areas with larger concentrations of gun owners have less crime. That's not to say that guns aren't used incorrectly and irresponsibly, but the number of fatalities from guns to automobile accidents are significantly disproportionate to the amount of flak guns receive in legislature. But, then again, there's hardly any dependable, affordable public transportation in this country, and if there is, it's only available around larger cities, which only cover a minimal amount of the total inhabited area of the US. So it's no wonder.
