Before you freak out, I am NOT talking about "making beats", hip-hop, old school rap etc.
I'm not even talkin' about Industrial, Drum&Bass, Trance, Rave--whatver. No--not that. Here is the thing, and I swear to GOD I will pay for an explanation.. I live in Northern Jersey and there are a fair share of clubs and lounges. I'm not a club guy, but I'll do a lounge on occasion...hell I'll do a club too if the right women are there. (Sometimes you gotta take that House Of Pain T-shirt off and man up!) Anyway.. So people, mostly girls FLIP OUT over who is "spinning" where. At my gym, which is next to like 3 clubs--they have lobby cards for the clubs all over the place, with pictures of these guys and it's like "Thurs nite @ Sand Bar!! D.J. Freddy Tightshirt spins till 3 A.M.!" D.J. Freddy??---He sorta like Muggs? No he isnt, not even F'ing close! So, I go to this place the other night, which I love actually. It's "Sushi Lounge" great food, drinks, women and Kung Fu Theatre on about 100 T.V.s. It was PACKED because this DJ was there. So being in a band, and more important, someone who "supports" music of many kinds..I'm intrigued. You know what this guy does? I swear, I'm not kidding--it's basically an iPod plugged into a mixer. That's it. Everyone is freaking out and I'm like..this is retarded! All he is doing is playing songs!! He's playing like old Freestyle and House songs... Basically he'll play a song, then you'll hear him take the low end out...the mid range gets really high and he'll bring in another song ontop of the one of the one that's ending...it'll come in with a "phaser" and he'll switch the channels on the speakers...then it just plays and thats it!--THAT IS IT! Once in awhile he friggin tricked me and played like the begining to a RUN-DMC or Grandmaster Flash track and I was "oh nice!!"--then all the sudden the bass would disapear, the song would fade out and some crap would play over it that was just some random Freestyle track. People were going nuts..NUTS for this guy. All I could think of how easy this seemed--he wasn't "making the beats" he was just playing songs...that is it. The guy was like what DJs on the radio used to be...just playing the songs. Is anyone into this? Seriously because I'm missing something. I need to know how to get involved with this sort of thing. I've been struggling in a band for 8 years...I could do this and be surrounded by beautiful women till dawn. Wtf!? |

Yeah it's amazing how someone can take an incredibly simple task and make a profession out of it.

no mate we get that here in the UK as well, its commonly found in places were people are more interested in hearing chart style mainstream music and getting pissed up, than actually seeing a DJ, im guessing the people who attend these things think they are "the hot shit" and really down with the coolest beats in town......UH NO YOU REALLY AINT....

I think to be a DJ is to simply be the one in control of the music at a party/event. From my understanding DJ's existed before hiphop and hiphop introduced mixing and scratching.

I've never understood the appeal. Mixing songs is cool, and mixing unexpected tracks is cool to. But the credit needs to go to the songs and the musicians that made them, not the guy spinning records.

I don't think there is anything special about it, but I do feel that a DJ has a place at a party. Someone has to be responsible for the music. Understanding the music people wanna hear can be a profession. You really have to invest alot of time to get that down. Whatever kind of music you play. I used to DJ partys, wedding, skate comps, and on the FM airways. I really don't dig all that techno stuff though. I say "heck no to techno".
Dance punk over techno.

no dude theres def a skill to mixing, its not production or writing admittedly, but im friends with a whole bunch of people who actually DJ,and the time they put in practising sets, and fine tuning their skills is amazing.the thing is until you actually hear a bad DJ (see above) or hear someone drop a bollock in the middle of a mix you dont realise the skill involved.....
