I had a buddy back in ny who Spins and as much of a nerd as he is it was always amazing to see how much he would pull like girls just coming up and throwing there selves at the dj, i think it was cause they thought he could get them into all the good clubs.
but i too miss the music of fab five freddy like that whole scene meant something now you got all these mc's with names like lil this and lil that and they suck they just use voice effects that make them sound like starscream. And talk about how they aint supporting there babies mommas cause they cant poplock and drop it nomore etc etc

to clarify, Sir Goggles, Dubstep is but my latest obsession. i come from the old school. '92 Techno popped my cherry... i yawned at Trance... House music saved my life... DnB kept me interested... and Dubstep blew me away anew. check it! |

9 times out of 10, a DJ will just plug their IPod or laptop into a club's sound system...but every once in a while there will be a DJ who will spend hours with an MP3 mixer to break a song down and slow down or speed up beats.
I have a lot of friends here in Chicago who are DJs mainly at Goth and Industrial clubs (Exit, Neo, LNG, etc.) and they will have several playlists made up to have non stop mixes, and they will go through each and every song to have it roll through to keep the people dancing, cause the more they dance, the thirstier they get and more they drink. Most will take 5 songs that are similar and adjust them all so it's a full mix, then take a break and do requests, then hit another 5 song string. As for popularity, it all depends on what your in too. I've never been, nor want too be at a club where top name DJs like that Samantha Ronson broad, or her brother play at (they both come to Chicago quite often) but Industrial DJs like Noir, Sp@ula/Hughes, Moyer, Evil Needle, Propaganda, and Viru5 usually get full houses towards the middle of the night so they apparently do something right... Though it dosen't hurt that even in the 3rd largest city, only 3 clubs are geared towards that genre. But regardless, a good DJ isn't just some schlep off the street, they do put effort into making people have fun.

Me too... First experiences with techno was overseas in the early 90s. I eventually got my break playing chemical breaks in 96 (while still in the military). Today I mostly play psytrance and deep house.

Now the kind of "DJing" this guy was doing, hell no, but I respect the DJ's that can mix and do their thing on the turntables, as well as control the flow of the party. I've been to parties where they just paid their cousin to spin records, and I've been to parties who actually put money into a guy who had skills, and I've had WAY more fun at those, and danced my ass off for 5 hours strait.
The ones who put in work, and learn their craft have skills, and I'm not going to take a thing away from them. As far as them not doing their original music, well how I see it... they're doing with music what us customizers do with toys.

Lots of people don't get collecting toys when you are already like 35 years old so I mean not getting DJ'ing is basically the same thing. And is it me or does PitViper think 85% of everything he sees is "gay" or wtf lol? Must be a Jersey thing.

You do have to credit(?) these socially clever folks that are able to tap these fads for profit or social status, while they are popular. |
