I don't think there is anything special about it, but I do feel that a DJ has a place at a party. Someone has to be responsible for the music. Understanding the music people wanna hear can be a profession. You really have to invest alot of time to get that down. Whatever kind of music you play. I used to DJ partys, wedding, skate comps, and on the FM airways. I really don't dig all that techno stuff though. I say "heck no to techno".
Dance punk over techno. I hate all that scratching and blending |

I don't get it either. All they're doing is playing songs. You could train a monkey to do that. It's just a minimum wage job as far as I'm concerned. You don't see people freaking out saying " You gotta go down to the Wendys and watch Joey McSlackoff flip burgers! Hes da bomb!"

ok... check it out.
i grew up around DJ's my entire life. my older brother was a DJ during the 80's. called himself 'Erotic City' - yes, after the Prince classic. during the early 90's i was heavily involved in the L.A. Underground scene - shortly thereafter called 'raves.' a term that still makes me cringe. i have tons of DJ friends to this day. ok... so my credentials are there for you to be like 'whatever' about. lol. this is the thing. a DJ is a "selector." he dictates the ebb and flow of a party. if done correctly (key term,) a DJ will enamor enough sweaty gyrating bodies that he/she subsequently creates a "following." people will flock to see him the next time because they can't get over the orgy that went down on the dancefloor the time before. so to speak. they get hooked and follow like deadheads. remember the key is when done correctly. what you experienced, with the DJ cutting out awesome tracks that you got all excited about, is pure crap. that's a total buzzkill. these DJ's are more concerned with flexing their mixing skills, then to actually rock a party. when you're out having a good time and a DJ is 'on point,' there is nothing sweeter. a DJ makes or breaks a party. these days, too many DJ's are on Serato and laptops. also known as CDJ's. no one spins vinyl anymore because its cheaper to burn mp3's onto discs. they even scratch on discs too, which is WICK-WICK-WACK!!! a true DJ spins vinyl AND discs these days. if a cat can't mix and scratch on vinyl, he's not a DJ. he's a Decepticon. enough of me... KRS said this all before. turn up your speakers. Last edited by SH0CKWAVE; 05-28-2010 at 07:00 PM.. |

Sounds like common sense to me. Kinda like "you can't just let a burger cook on one side. You have to flip it. "
I don't mean to piss you off. I really don't. There are quite a few professions that are taken way too seriously and blown way out of proportion. Actors are a perfect example of this. They get paid millions to do what I was doing when I was six in my back yard. And agian, you could train a monkey to do that. Wait a minute. They have trained monkeys to do that. |

Any dude that can get behind 2 turntables and go to work with a crate of vinyl mixing and scratching and essentially creating music with what he has back there is one thing...that = original sh*t! I support that. The guys I'm talking about...man, it's literally like they have those cds "Techno Hits of 09" and they're just cueing up songs and people are watching in amazement. I understand this guy is controlling the flow of the party--I also feel that is the most overated cat in the room. The other issue is around here? They are buzzing around by the boat load--again, basically a good 20-30 dudes that are literally playing songs from K.T.U.--chaning tempos, adjusting levels--that is all I see. Lemme tell ya, workin a good buzz and waiting for something good to come on...then all the sudden theres silence, know what I hear next? "You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge" My immediate thoughts were "NWA!? I'm about to start a muthaf*ckin mosh pit!!!" You know what his street knowledge was?...A techno version of "Heart Of Glass" by Blondie--but ruined, I mean it sounded like ED-209 was singing it. The only thing more deflating then the "NWA trick?"---ROC. Damnit I said it! |

KRS said this all before. turn up your speakers. In regards to vinyl, I have much love and respect for it. But digital technology has done so much for the music as a whole. Unfortunately, you have to take the good with the bad. Yes, you get djs that do nothing more than plug in their iPods and are human jukeboxes and it takes away from those who actually use technology as instruments (much like we used vinyl decks as instruments) and actually mix it up. I've since retired from the dj biz because it's so saturated with @sshats like this *cough, Pauly D, cough*. Jerkoffs with no musical skill whatsoever but "fist pump" and the people think he's some kind of god!! It's sickening.
