The Trials and Tribulations of Eddy Curry -- NBA FanHouse
Eddy Curry of the Knicks, NBA player. He's got a 60 mil contract and no money. How does that happen? He's had it rough, but seriously, how do you make that much money and then burn it? Borrowed $585,000 in a loan with 85% (85%!!!!! WTF!!!) interest. Make 11 mil or so a year, what the hell do you need $585,000 in loan for? $4.5 millon mansion, kids go to private school, $6000 a month personal chef, $17,000 in monthly rent, $30,000 in expenses and $16,000 to hanger-ons/family. Seriously, you need money here's how: -Get rid of the luxary cars (he reportedly couldn't name all the cars he has). -Get rid of the personal chef (there's $6,000 right there, if you can't live off of $6k a month, you seriously need someone to hold your hand, go move back with your parents). -Get rid of the 4.5 millon mansioin. -Get the kids out of private school. -Tell the family to take care of themselves. -Ditch the leechs that you call friends. -What do you need $17k in montly rent for when you own a 4.5 millon dollar home???? Wow... This is what happens when you get drafted right out of Highschool basically. These kids don't know the value of money because a) they never had it, and b) they may not have held down a regular part time job during school. These kids have no sense of perspective, no idea of real value. I mean, WTF does 11 million dollars a year even mean? It might as well be 11 billion dollars, for all he knows. How can a kid understand what that really means? Taxes? Interest? etc. Schools don't teach you how to balance a cheque book very well, cause if they did, Americans in general wouldn't be in so much debt today. Heck, I've been working since I was 13, in one job or another, working for family and working for corporations, and I have to say, I can't even grasp the idea of making 11 million dollars a year. This dude needs a real financial planner, and new set of friends. EDIT: Also, 85% interest? Whoever lent him that money should be taken out into the alley and shot, cause that's absolutely fucking criminal. Last edited by pud333; 05-27-2010 at 02:06 PM.. |

Like Troy suggested, you would think the Franchise would take the time to give these guys budgeting lessons, because it could lead to potentially higher profits for them. That's assuming the players didn't ask for bigger contracts since their finances are in better order. |

Btw, my understanding on the 85% interest loan is that it is ONLY legal in Nevada, which is where he took it.
An entire state devoted to feeding the gambling industry is, to my mind, a much uglier thing than one young athlete wasting his money, and much more shameful.

You know I have friends that make $150,000+ a year, and I can't even fathom that let alone 11 million.

That's assuming the players didn't ask for bigger contracts since their finances are in better order. Maybe that's the fear with the teams, that if their finances are in order, the players will want more since they'll be better educated about it. The way I see it, it's almost irresponsible for teams to not take care of their players. I mean, wouldn't you have a more productive player if they had their personal shit in order? I'm not saying they should babysit them, but at least some basics are in order I would think. |

Let who is without sin go ahead and donate the first dollar. Stop paying for every unnecessary thing like the internet, GI Joes, comics, books, games, etc., and give every last non-necessary cent you have to charity. That'd be a great way to lead by example. Then you'd have the moral authority to make that claim.
I feel that this attitude is why the world will always remain apathetic towards improving itself. Quote:
Also, as far as athletes running through all their money; this is not uncommon for people who have sudden windfalls. I think the leagues could do a better job of making sure athletes find competent financial advisers. Not an abrogation of personal responsibility here, just saying, it's not AT ALL uncommon for people who have a sudden windfall...like a high draft pick or a big lottery winner...to spend all their money.

Well if you don't frame your post as being an opinion, you're going to get people to call you on statements that have no basis in reality. |

Eh, every post is someone's opinion, backed by facts or not.

I think the problem w/ people like this (Curry) is that they're surrounded by yes-people and nobody is brave enough to stand up and say "Hey! YOU'RE BEING AN ASS! Now STOP!"
