similar story happened to Antoine Walker. along with a host of others.
the truth of the matter is, many of these athletes are not well educated. they have qualified people run their assets, thus a big payroll. to top it all off, there's the influence of modern pop culture. the music. the lifestyle. the clothes. the casinos. the vacations. the bling. the women. it adds up pretty quickly. especially if you can barely count your beans. The NBA stopped recruiting right out of high school, which helps deal with some of the maturity issues they were having. But the problem still exists that even as a "student-athelete" they're not getting an education and no one is teaching 'em how to deal with all the money when they get it. It still boggles the mind. Here we are living (living decently to well) off of 1% of what he makes (I make less a month then Curry's personal chef) and we can still afford to buy toys.

Re: Minstrelboy
First of all, no job is worth that much. Look, if we're gonna be all moralistic, no, no job is. But we're not. A job is worth what it makes. Sports is a multi-billion dollar a year industry. The athletes aren't getting paid "too much" relative to what they bring in, or at least the executives who sign them don't think they are. Most clubs operate in the black or they wouldn't keep spending money on players. Second of all, sports are not a job. Wrong. A job is anything somebody will pay you for. I guarantee you, I PROMISE you, most professional athletes work harder than you or me. If they don't, they don't get to be professional athletes very long. Third, paying professional athletes (and movie stars, and musicians, and CEOs) this much enables all the worst and stupidest of human flaws. Fourth, unless you're actually involved in the game being played, nobody else needs to get involved. Get up and play or go home, but don't stand there and yell at somebody who fumbled or whatever while you're shoving food in your face. OMG SOMEONE ON THE INTERNETS IS WAVING HIS MORALISTIC FINGER AT SPORTS FANS, WHATEVER SHALL WE DO. I'm gonna go check on my FBB team and look over some of my favorite baseball websites while you're busy telling us all how to feel. TRILLIONS of dollars are dumped into sports every year; money that could be used to solve significant problems, like feeding and clothing homeless children. Sure. Let who is without sin go ahead and donate the first dollar. Stop paying for every unnecessary thing like the internet, GI Joes, comics, books, games, etc., and give every last non-necessary cent you have to charity. That'd be a great way to lead by example. Then you'd have the moral authority to make that claim. This high-handed nonsense was begging for it. Also, as far as athletes running through all their money; this is not uncommon for people who have sudden windfalls. I think the leagues could do a better job of making sure athletes find competent financial advisers. Not an abrogation of personal responsibility here, just saying, it's not AT ALL uncommon for people who have a sudden windfall...like a high draft pick or a big lottery winner...to spend all their money.

No sympathy for this idiot. And a loan with 85% interest is illegal, so that rate would have to come from a loan shark. Anybody who squanders that much money is nothing but a dumb asshole.

However, despite all this it makes me proud to know that I can support three people (and my hobby) on less than what his chef makes in a year. |

Why can't that be worked into the contracts? There are clauses for behavior, off-season activities and such, why not a clause for a team appointed financial advisor? These guys are investments by the teams afterall. True, and I can see that with the signing bonus (blowing it quickly and extravegantly), but we're talking a guy that gets 11 mil a year regularly. Not a true sudden windfall, that's a salary.

That's true, Troy; but I also think that many athletes get used to the steady cash flow and never think about planning. They go right from the big signing bonus/first contract and once that's all gone, they're either broke OR they get another, bigger contract that allows them to perpetuate bad habits.
