Ok, def check with the belt 1st. The bearing and pully could be the problem and if it is...It's gonna suck. They will have to be replaced and you are probably looking at around 600.00-800.00 that's including labor. You may get lucky, if it's NOT the pully or a bearing issue, it could very well be the power steering pump. Do you notice any fraying on the belt? Does one edge look worn down or smoothed out? The mushy brakes could be a few things. 1. If it's mushy most of the time there may be a leak--they will start with the master cylinder and work down to the calipers to check for a leak. 2. It may very well just be shot calipers, its a quick fix in comparison to other things you have going on. You can get cheap calipers--and tell them you want some no frills, aftermarket calipers--no way you should be puting dealer parts in that car. 3. Unless the guy says right away--It's the pulley--ask him to change the belt 1st. If you experiance the same problem with a new belt that was put on and tightend right--bring it back, its obviously a bigger issue. 4. Keep an eye for leaks--power steering and brake. 5. It may just need "bushes and settings"---Put it in the bushes and set it on fire..ZOING!! That one never gets old!! No seriously--I hope that was of some help. |

It's ok man. For about 5 years in my 20's I had a 93 ford Taurus that had close to 500k miles on it. There are some cars that are just like that.
Good luck. My best friend is a mechanic. He always warns people that if they take it somewhere, and it takes more than 15 minutes to get a (free) repair estimate, to turn around and take it elsewhere.

if the brakes are squealing it needs a brake job, depending on how bad the squealing is/how long its been doing it, it may or may not need rotors, if they start grinding, you'll need new rotors

Mechanics get such a bad wrap.
I think the generalization is that we're a bunch of stupid grease monkeys. Not to say I haven't worked with some of the DUMBEST people in the world, but working on motorcycles in the same place for 6 years I've worked with some of the most problem solving "think outside the box" people out there. Places like Pep Boys, STS, Firestone, R&S---Not all of them, but alot of the mechanics there are off the street with no more knowledge than a tech at Jiffy Lube. Management hands these people diagnostic work on someone's car and you wonder why you have to take it back 50 times. It's a real shame you can't find a gas station that has 3 bays with an honest owner/mechanic who is good at his craft anymore. |

Now if only someone could tell me why it won't let me take it anywhere on Fridays. This car needs a mechanic and a voodoo priest. >_>;

I just dropped about $2000 on bearings for my jeep. You might have the power steering going out too. Might cost more than the car is worth. I will never buy American brand cars again from my experience.
