No a carrier is useless without it's attack aircraft. Fighters defend the attack aircraft. The entire point of a carrier is so that it can travel across sea and be a mobile airfield where attack aircraft can lift off and strike the enemy while with the Air Force, land bases in all countries are not always free to use.
Yes modern attack aircraft in the USN double as fighters now because multi-role has been the name of the game for the last 20+ years. Last edited by CrimsonGuard101; 05-11-2010 at 04:12 PM.. |

Meant "fighters" in general, not a specific role implied to any of them, given there are so many different types availble. A moving airfield. Just saying that its pointless to have that much money being pushed around the ocean if it's fighter jets are beyond obsolete as that is it's purpose to project that power wihtout the need to build new airbases closer for heavier missions.
What I was getting at is even with the fanciest aircraft we could build, it's only going to be as good as the oridinance we put on it. I think we should develop our own, and shouldn't depend on another country's. Last edited by Brcall; 05-11-2010 at 04:17 PM.. |

I think you can go even further, and apply that to all military branches though. With the US military being so much more powerful than any other individual nation's, I doubt they would oppose us on an open field of battle. I think it's why UAVs are so popular now.

The Phoenix was the most advanced air to air missle in the world and initially the Missleer was designed to carry it but was canceled. Same with the F-111B. NEITHER was as good as the Tomcat. The Tomcat could carry the AWG-9 radar AND Phoenix missle and even if you stripped it and the aforementioned F-111B, and Missleer of the AWG-9/Phoenix combo, the Tomcat was a better plane in all respects, and much much more capable. The F/A-XX isn't purely dependent on the weapons it's going to be armed with. That's like saying the F-15C + AESA/HMS/AIM-9X(Golden Eagle) is a better fighter than the F-22 because the F-22 lacks HMS while the Golden Eagle has it. |

By 2025, the US will most likely have a "proper" successor to the Phoenix missle in USN service. Even back during the ATF competition, a new long range missle was already being looked at.

I wasn't saying we should stop production of advanced aircraft, but saying that we need to develop both consecutively. I guess missiles aren't as sexy as aircraft so you don't hear about them as often. If I'm wrong in assuming we don't have any current programs addressing this just ignore me.
The tailless look of the F/A-XX piques my interest, it's definitely adopted for more stealth but I wonder how it affects aerodynamics. |
