The Navy is also supposed to be fielding the F-35 when it goes operational. One of the variants they're building is specifically designed for carrier operations.

Yes the F-35C is replacing the F/A-18C Legacy Hornets; the F/A-XX will proposed to replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.

Odd plane..I am betting the unmanned versions will start replacing most of the manned units. They can make them smaller and save pilots lives especially in highly defended areas. Manned arial combat will eventually give way to AI and computers soon me thinks, till one drops a bomb on little timmey's school by "accident"

The Hornet may eventually upgrade and get clearance for long range METEOR missles. If that capability is obtained, it's a sure bet the F/A-XX will have it to begin with, as it's going to be a long while before we see the F/A-XX and whatever we get on the Super Hornet will most likely be outdone by the F/A-XX.

Have to justify the costs to man, fuel, operate those huge carriers of ours with something. A carrier is usless without it's fighter compliment. They might as well start moth balling those if they are not going to make better and newer jets for em. However newer jets will eventually not even need a carrier since they could operate by computer from just about any atol or island in the world as long as thier was an automated fueling station for them to hook up to or other unmanned refeuling drones. They could even go sub oribital/orbital to a fueling sattelite and reneter the earths atmosphere over thier target faster then normal flying. To quote Ivan Vanko from Iron Man 2 "Drones betta"... so the carriers days are numbered as well I am sure do to expense. They were great to have to flex muscles off with Russia and China but today they really don' care anymore. And smaller countries would be like "oooh look at the big old boats to blow up and sink!"

By 2025 it's not unrealistic to expect a long range missle by us. Also it's not out of the realm of possibility to field the Meteor on US fighters, it's already being talked about with the Super Hornet upgrades.

Yes modern attack aircraft in the USN double as fighters now because multi-role has been the name of the game for the last 20+ years. |
