well I've been working for the same company for 5 years. when I first started there I was on 21 to 30 hrs a week. I work in a video store (which also it a retail store)
right now I'm on 8 hrs and pretty soon I'll be down to 4 . i've always come in when rang up ant sum one was sick . when they needed me to come in early to start I obliged and I also went and picked up Items for store to store transfer outa my own time. well the last two years we've been without a manager and we've had two temp ones. the first one was a total nightmare. handing out verbal warnings left and right cus he was on a power trip. now I wouldn't say were and overaly busy store . but we do have the odd days were it gets totaly up the walls and things don't get done. so we had this guy for a while as manager then he left . and we have this new girl .anyhu she had me down for "training" for a 5 to 8 shift one evening and the guy who came in afterward was the new employee who'd only been there a week. and was going to left on his own. to close .(the part time staff have are generally left to run the store on there own except on weekends and the delivery day) anyhu this particular day she had me down for working early ususaly I close . but it was for some extra training . but she wasn't feeling well and went home early so I did what I usualy do vault returns and serve customers. the new guy was on from 6 and i was only there till 8 so there was two hrs we woulda been working together. (the manager had outlined for him to restock the shelfs ) so I told him what she wanted him to do and left him off to do it . anyhu I noticed he was having trouble so I asked him if he needed a hand and he said he was ok so left him a while longer then he was still stuggling and ended up helping him out .(so I left the store asuming he would be able to complete his job) the next day I was called in and given out to cus the shop was left un tidy and messy from the night before. and she said "i being the senior staff member shoulda tided the whole shope before I left that night" I was pissed at that . I'm only part time and not a staff trainer I don't get paid extra for that task .and I was finished at 8 a whole 2 hrs before the shop closes !! the next incident was a week ago I was called in as one of the other staff members was sick.so I went in a 6 and the shop was sorta messy . so I did my best to get on-top of everything as there was a lot of returns and a lot of people to serve . so I find out our Auditor was in the next day and was unimpressed at the state of the shop.were I had to stay on an extra 45 minutes after closing unpaid to tidy as much as I could. so I get sent a letter the next day to come to an investigation as to why the shop was left untidy . that was this morning . and all I could figure out from it was that there were on a witch-hunt to basically get me to say well yes this was all my fault that the shop was dirty . but I just said I didn't have the time to clean the shop. what else can I say. I mean who else here would stand for this kinda crap ?

You're 26 years old. Time to get a new job, I'd say. Perhaps start going for a real career with fulltime work. Or just get a new job, any new job. This company isn't worth your time.

I have to agree with this. I worked retail from when I was 16 up until I was 23, at several different retail places, they are all the same when it comes down to people and functionality. making a different choice in my career and the way I made money was probably one of the best decisions ive ever made. If you're unhappy with your current position, it doesn't matter how long you've been there, there is no point in doing something every day that irritates you. They are paying you to do what they want, and are only satisfied if it gets done reguardless of who is involved whether they've been there for 5 days or 5 years. Most people in retail come and go like the company is using them as toilet paper. My recommendation is to find something that pays you for doing something you enjoy, and that you are good at, so that you don't have to deal with whatever someone else screwed up the day before. Even a simple office job would be better in the aspect that your work generally would not be affected/tarnished by the work of others. (In reference to tidyness/punctuality/completion).

call the labor board and inform them you were forced to stay 45 minutes unpaid to clean up the shop. file a complaint. as soon as they receive the complaint any further harassment can be construed to be in retaliation for the complaint. stand up for your rights as an employee. you have nothing to lose in this situation, it clearly isn't going to be a long-term job for you so you may as well try to make it as tolerable and end the harassment while you are still there.

Also, I would never work off the clock (it's even illegal in the US). If something were to happen to you while you were there you're S.O.L., because Workman's Comp won't touch you. At least in the US. |

Not sure how things are done in Ireland, but I've done this before and it worked. Once a complaint is made (by you) you gain a tad bit of immunity.

cheers guys n (no probs Weezuss I'll let em know that lol)
bty guys i'm 29 ! :( I think Pud meant to type that not 6. heck I like to think I'm 26 if thats ok. tho most people think I'm 18 or 20 (physical appearance wise) I'm planning on trying on getting a position working for the post office (which would be awesome as I love sorting things and find places) the real Kicker is I actually like my current job. not only cus I like some of my fellow employee's but I love the people who come in to the shop and I know most of them on a personal lvl. its like folks at a comic book store to me. you know their likes and dislikes and you can talk to them on the same lvl.
