I was at a school function for my youngest daughter and heard one of the other parents say, and I quote "My boys never even SEEN a black person before...".
Mind you, I live in a rural part of NJ and yes, the area is considered to be "the country" but still, to raise your child in a world oblivious to people of other ethnic heritage, race, creed or color is just ignorant. I didn't hear the first part of the conversation, and frankly didn't need to hear the rest. That alone was enough to make me embarrassed of being in the same room. I truly wonder how some people make it through the day being so devoid of intelligence, tact and heart. |

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who are isolated like that, especially in rural areas. I'm Asian, so growing up in the rural areas was kind of rough sometimes. It's amazing the looks I would get. Of course, not all looks were negative. Some people were genuinely curious. Ignorance helped me growing up though, cause people thought I knew Karate or some other sort of martial art, so kids mostly left me alone, haha.

On a lighter note, I had one of employees state that we wouldn't need to paint the office wall during a remodel as the drywall "would just fill itself in".
Yes, she did indeed imply that sheetrock was an organic material. *cringe* |

My "cringe moment" was while sitting in one of my physics classes our professor comes in talking about hydroplaning. She procedes to put up a Power Point presentation of a car that had obviously spun off the road, and from the other side of the room comes a booming voice "OH, I SAW THAT MORON THE OTHER DAY! WHAT AN IDIOT!" It was the professor's car... |

What's amazing is, you can watch a group of kids at play...African American, Asian, Indian, Latino, Caucasion etc. and then ask them "who is that?'. They will answer "that's Bob the boy with the blue shirt on" rather than "the black kid". Children don't see race, color or creed..they just see other little children. That pure innocence, that simplicity of life is such a beautiful, heart-warming thing and all children are born with this precious gift. They have until a parent or guardian takes it away from them. |

At target I saw a mother threaten to punch her 3 or 4 year old boy in the face. "If you don't shut up I will punch you in your face." I figured that kid will be in jail before he's 21.

Watching grown men & women literally spill their drinks and food to jump up and do the Macarena, when it comes on out of nowhere.

Seeing my grandmother naked when I was twelve, which may have been just before shaving became popular with the older generation. :(
