Oh, here we go.
I live in the rural Midwest and never actually saw a black person until I flew to Europe in high school 22 years ago - and that was at the airport. In Boston. I now live in a somewhat bigger town of about 10,000 and I couldn't tell you if I've ever seen a black person since I moved here 10 years ago. Certainly don't consider myself devoid of intelligence, and if someone asked me if my sons have ever seen a black person, I'd have to say probably not. There's nothing devoid of tact in speaking the truth in that context. Not seeing black people frequently sure doesn't stop me from being a volunteer fireman, participating in Big Brothers, and starting a sports equipment drive at work so all the local kids can play soccer and baseball. Some asshole shot and killed a cop in the big city near my home over the weekend - in a park where people like to run and bike and do all kinds of stuff that people like me enjoy. I was cringed up like Hell when I read that in the paper. That prick was black. The other buttpoke charged was white as a daisy, though. Hmm. Wonder why I don't see more black people around home?

I cringe every time I have to take one of those CFL bulbs back to the store to be 'recycled' and when I got to pick out a replacement, every fekking package says "Lasts 7 Years!"
I think the cringes are caused by the spring in my bullshit-o-meter popping loose. |

People driving while talking on a cell phone. The number of times I've had to swerve or dodge out of someones way, only to look over and see them with a cell phone glued to their face.
The sound of dishes *clanking*. I hate that noise, literally makes me sick to my stomach....

That sucks.
What's amazing is, you can watch a group of kids at play...African American, Asian, Indian, Latino, Caucasion etc. and then ask them "who is that?'. They will answer "that's Bob the boy with the blue shirt on" rather than "the black kid". Children don't see race, color or creed..they just see other little children. That pure innocence, that simplicity of life is such a beautiful, heart-warming thing and all children are born with this precious gift. They have until a parent or guardian takes it away from them. Example, my 2 year old daughter will reach out for near about anyone I introduce her to be they male, female, black, white or hispanic. Not long ago, my step-son who was about 8 at the time said something (don't remember what exactly), but anyways it had very improper grammar. His sister (my step-daughter) who was about 5 giggled and said, "Momma, he sounded like a brown person." I can guarantee no one had ever used the term "brown person" in our household and it's obviously an innocent child-like descriptor. She had made her own observation based on her own experience at school and we ascertained as much when we questioned her about it. In short, I do think kids pick up on differences, but it is mostly without malice or prejudice.

I'm not a parent but still...
Seing a woman yap on the cell phone while her 3 year old girl almost gets hit by a car. So much for caring for your kids.

God yes. Working in medicine you will see things that make you wonder how survival of the fittest hasn't already weeded some people out.

How about when the look you get from a parent, as you shuffle through store pegs, looking for figures...the "aren't you a little old for that" look LOL
Seems to happen to me a lot at Target. |
