I noticed that Rob Liefeld is analogous to an anathema among fanboys. People have absolutely nothing positive to say about the dude. Me, myself for some reason I have a lot of the old Extreme titles. Youngblood, Brigade, Team Youngblood, Supreme, and Newmen. Maybe some others that I'm not recalling. Anyway, I have a personal affinity to Supreme because my suggestion for the title of the letter column was taken.
Being older, I do see some of the gripes with the product that Extreme Studios was putting out at the time. The characters were vastly underdeveloped. There was hints at interesting storylines, but they were never explored and I do understand the dislike of his drawing style. Everybody doesn't have to look like they're on HGH. Personally, I enjoyed the middle issues of Brigade, issues 10-15 were good reading. Bloodstrike, (the team as opposed to just Cabbot,) was a cool concept. The second series of Youngblood is hot, and Supreme, I just like the idea behind the character before Alan Moore took over the book. A dude with god like powers being a total dick. How can you not like that? I think one of the things that really killed Image is that Liefeld simply flooded the market with too much product. As I re-read the books and the upcoming section, Liefeld was putting out two or three new titles every month, while the series that were already out weren't even on stable ground. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the guys at Image had fewer titles. Jim Lee had WildC.A.T.S., Gen13, Stromwatch, and some other titles. Mark Slivestri had Codename: Strykeforce, Cyberforce, and something I can't remember. Jim Valentino had Shadow Hawk. Whilce Portacio had Wetworks, Erik Larsen had Super Patriot and Savage Dragon, Tood McFarlene had Spawn. Rob Liefeld had his and everybody else's ideas known to man. The fandom is only so big. Supply far exceed demand. I guess Liefeld fell victim to believing the hype. Was Rob Liefeld the comic book equivalent to Britney Spears? All style and no substance, and if so why was he so popular. Was it because the young masses not knowing any better? Or was Liefeld's popularity due to "social proof?" Again, I will admit his work did leave something to be desired, but I don't understand the hatred. I do agree with him concerning Shatterstar. I hope he's able to come back to Marvel and right the great wrong Peter David did to what is otherwise a cool character. |

It's Liefeld that people have a problem with, him personally.
His work isn't necessarily it (although he hasn't grown as an artist over the years). I liked all the old Image stuff, including all of Extreme. I loved the original Supreme. Alan Moores, well good, just turned him into a pure Superman clone. When it was Brian Murphy (right?) doing Supreme he was great cause he was such a jerk. It's just that Liefeld is a jerk and his ego caused alot of problems through the years. He was so popular when he first hit because his style was so different from anything else out there.

Its is the age old question, can you enjoy an artist's work even if they are not so nice of a person?
ex. Steve Howe from Yes is my favorite guitarist, and I read in magazines and on videos for years that he is a nightmare of a human being . I personally saw him in Connecticut 2 years ago and he stopped playing a song and told everyone " to shut the F&*^ up!" Seriously, the guy is like 70 years old! I guess it doesn't matter to me what the person is like, I still enjoy what they can do. |

I was just getting into comic books when Image launched, and while I never followed Liefeld's titles (I was more into what Todd McFarlane and Jim Valentino were doing), I never understood the hate. A friend of mine was a fan so I would see his work occasionally, but I've certainly seen far worse artwork. I saw him at his booth at ComicCon when I went a few years ago, and he seemed like a pleasant enough guy.

I like the work of alot of people that I don't find to be good people.
With Liefeld it was because he put himself out there as the next big thing, a game changer, etc...
