I just came across this article, and it was quite eye opening.
http://www.inc.com/news/articles/201...tner=yahoobuzz I had no idea that, once shoplifters set foot outside the store, they are scot free. The only reason I bring it up is that if stores are, to an extent, helpless against wily shoplifters, what power do they have against repackers and figure switchers?

It's kinda hard to prove someone repacked. He could say it was like that when he bought it and is returning it because of it.

Well, it's really because of the policy of the store. It does make sense from the perspective of the corporation. If their policy was that they had to pursue shoplifters, then they leave themselves at risk to deal with the aftermath if that employee gets injured or even killed. Say someone gets stabbed or shot to death while chasing a shoplifter. Then they company is going to get sued up the wazoo. My guess is that it saves them money in the long run.

that is an interesting article and question in general my best friend used to be a manager at wal-mart for like 14 years and he said to me most of these wal-marts lose at least a million to a mill and a half to losses every year and i don't mean food going bad returns anything like that just stuff going out the door front and back they caught people all the time cops were always at his store but if cost less than $25.00 you could pretty much walk out the store with it because of no chase policy , i think you should be able to tazer them in the store and search them while they are still twitching on the ground it is bull shit ive turned people in for shoplifting nobody cares it sucks....
most of the time the insurance carrier for the store pays back all their losses everybody has to have insurance even fucking wal-mart.... |

it costs much more to pursue charges than what the value of the item is for the most part. not to mention any possible lawsuits. does Wal Mart even want to pay a lawyer for an hours work because somebody stole maybe $20-$50 worth is stuff. of course not, that lawyer probably gets paid $200 per hour.

the lesson learned is if you are shoplifting, and a store employee approaches you, tell them to fuck off and keep walking. they won't attempt to detain you against your will for fear of injury and litigation, and won't chase you once you leave the store. just don't get in your car and let them see your license plate, and make sure you run fast enough to be gone by the time the Police arrive.

I wonder what would happen if you were pretty bold about it. Say you walked in grabbed a bunch of stuff and walked out with the items in plain view.
It's too bad you couldn't have some sort of tazer cannon at the entrance. I suppose you would have to be pretty sure the person was shoplifting. But, if you were sure, I say taze 'em bro. |
