I worked for department store in the late nineties. There was a security camera vcr tape that was being passed around by people on the "in" showing some of my coworkers at the time (and one that remains a good friend of mine today) as they recovered stolen merchandise.
Set to "Rhymin' and Stealin' " by the Beastie Boys, it shows shoplifters being tackled, jumped and in some cases dragged mere inches from what they perceived as freedom. Wish I could post it here. Good times. |

Wow... I remember working at Target as a teenager in the late 80's... once grabbed a kid as he jumped on the back of his sister's car to try and make a getaway and she just drove away from underneath him (he was a REALLY light kid). It was never "shoplifting" until they left the store so we ALWAYS apprehended them outside. We'd even handcuff 'em.

When I was at university, I used to work for a hip music/comic shop. We ALWAYS chased shoplifters, after awhile you don't think anything of the potential danger etc, until one day we caught this kid. He was okay till he heard the cops had been called, then punched the manager in the face and pulled a knife on me. Stopped chasing shoplifters as aggressively or as avidly after that. Found out later that the kid got into a squabble with some drug addict the next day 10m from the store and used a machete like weapon to cut three of the guy's fingers off.
Kinda scary. Thank goodness I don't work retail anymore. |

In the nineties a Target store in my area had a thing called code 13 or something and when announced it meant someone was seen shoplifting and all available employees were to go to the exits and block them so they couldn't escape. I never saw it happen and don't know if they still do it.
