that is an interesting article and question in general my best friend used to be a manager at wal-mart for like 14 years and he said to me most of these wal-marts lose at least a million to a mill and a half to losses every year and i don't mean food going bad returns anything like that just stuff going out the door front and back they caught people all the time cops were always at his store but if cost less than $25.00 you could pretty much walk out the store with it because of no chase policy , i think you should be able to tazer them in the store and search them while they are still twitching on the ground it is bull shit ive turned people in for shoplifting nobody cares it sucks....
most of the time the insurance carrier for the store pays back all their losses everybody has to have insurance even fucking wal-mart.... When I was younger it was all the rage for the store I worked at to call all male employees to aid security in detaining a shop lifter, and as a young lad I would have fought anything in those days so to be sanctioned to kick ass was awesome. Two incidents made it not so awesome. -One was chasing a woman stealing pants into the parking lot...as we chased her she was ducking and weaving between parked cars until she got to open lot...I figured this was a matter of time now, there were more of us, and younger, in better shape and she had literally a stack of jeans she had picked up and ran with, so she was getting tired of running, when a car pull up between us and her, a dude jumped out opened his trunk and reached in for.... I nearly crapped myself thinking this was a gun coming out. I even dove at my buddy so we could get cover behind a car...luckily it ended up being a pipe and they got away. Still not having learned my lesson a few years later... -Our security guard asked for some back up in dealing with a guy that was a credit card fraud...the plan...simply deny his purchase, seemed simple enough...or so I thought until I was riding this fellow down the front end. Yup he took a swing at the guard I jumped on the dude and started pounding on his neck with fists, and rode him down the checkouts until he smashed me into a stack of totes. Dazed I saw him running out the doors and the security guard now recovered from his punch in hot persuit...as they bounded out the door I heard two gun shots (the first ever I had heard in real life). I stumbled to the door and found the security guy hiding behind a trash can that was outside the doors...two bullet holes in the wall. That was enough for me......I'm a clerk at a store, you don't pay me to risk my life. Money, merchandise take whatever you want. I have zero interest in shoplifters now. |

Interesting read; they should just let them go anyway though... the eye in the sky see's all (learned that from watching Casino, lol). Plus, the security cameras are so good now they can full on capture your face and then you are pretty much screwed anyway.

shoplifters can still be apprehended by the store, then the retail store calls and coordinates with the police and does the rest.
if the shoplifters made it outside the store, the police will take over and finish the job. shoplifters, people who boost diet pill drugs, people who switch clearance sticker, etc. normally the retail store will take note of it and then coordinate with local police and press charges. it really depends on which store will actually pursue such anti-theft measures. but hey, the stores still need to protect their assets, so they have to do something.

Well it does make sense to prevent chasing down a shoplifter outside of a store. It's not worth the risk for employees, they should leave it to law enforcement.

I recently caught a kid stealing at my grocery store. I was following him undercover and approached him when I saw the kid put 2 tall boys into his pockets. I grabbed him and brought him to the office. I guess he could've tried something. But I could tell he was scared shitless of me. So long story short they let him go. Basically because it can't be proven in court that he wasn't going to walk to a register and pay for it. So he would win the case. The company doesn't even bother to try because it's not worth it to them.
Another time, a fellow worker chased a guy out of the store stealing about $300 worth of beer. He got the stuff back, but the thief started running and for some reason he decided to chase him off the store's property. When he came back the Manager was super pissed because he could have been seriously hurt and that it would've been a huge lawsuit if something did happen. So I guess in the end, it's not really worth chasing these guys. That's why stores hire undercover security. Thats their job, not ours. I gotta say it is fun to grab these guys and watch them piss their pants tho. lol |

Sure, a shoplifter could brazenly walk out off a store with his stolen merchendise in plain sight. But the next time that person walks into that store a uniformed security officer will be on them like stink on $h!t, & more than likely a member of the local PD will be called to apprehend at the door for just cause.
The Shoplifter would only get away with it once, & never be able to shop at that store again. |
