Back in 98 right after I'd come home from Bosnia with the Army Reserves (I was an MP) I got a job at a mall as a security guard. I was called on the carpet a few times; really bad, for chasing after shoplifters. The final straw was after the mall changed hands and I tackled a shoplifter in the parking lot. I wasn't fired yet but the writing was on the wall so gave my 1 wk notice and called it a day.
So this doesn't surprise me at all, the legal, sue happy, CYA mentality in todays society is neutering our country

I saw four big WM employees in Ocoee(FL) follow a guy suspected of shoplifting out into the parking lot, grabbing him and shoving him. So either his rights were violated, or the stores enforce the no follow/no chase rule at their will.

The mall even had 2 SUV's for parking lot patrol and they were outfitted with jumppacks for stranded motorists etc. and after the Mall shut down we sat in the parking lot for 1 1/2 hrs at two of the four main entrances for the employees, who were primarily women and would often have the days deposit with them. So after the mall changed hands we had to take the jumpacks out of the trucks (we might get sued you know) and we reduced parking lot coverage to one truck on roving for 1hr after closing.

My brother just began working security at our local Sears and has been explaining this stuff to me. If a shoplifter leaves the store, they can only pursue them as far as the sidewalk that runs around the store. (Most of the time, once they see the suspect is intending to leave, they manage to head them off and catch them right at the door.) However, mall security covers the whole mall and its parking lot, so they can be called to help out if the shoplifter makes it off the sidewalk and into the lot.
A couple days ago a shoplifter made it off mall property, but Sears security was able to follow him with one of the surveillance cameras and saw him go inside one of the restaurants nearby. So a police officer who was on shift at the mall (the mall has an actual officer on duty during business hours) went to the restaurant, apprehended him, and brought him back to Sears to be processed. Haha!! Busted! |

That was exactly my point, my immediate supervisor understood where I was coming from and had done a hitch in the Navy and explained it something along the lines of "I could do what I knew to be right, or I could continue to get a pay check".
