I'd say it probably depends on the industry. In a small industry like comics, I'd imagine it would hit harder and be more difficult to absorb.

Sucks big time. I loved that site. Read all of the Joe comics there, Kingdom Come, Superman: Red Son, Y: The Last Man, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, etc. Many of which I am trying to get in TPB.

Then gotta ask the question: Of those that would download, and we remove the means, what would the impact of any other means of potential contribution by them be? For someone that downloads music, it could be a loss in concert ticket sales. For comics, a dent in the TPB market, most likely.

The music Vs. comics theory has a problem...
CD's don't increase in cost a few months after they are released... You can download any song that came out in the 90's for around a buck... Anybody price out G.I. Joe #155 lately? This site could only hurt the secondary comics market (Ebay, comic stores, etc...) The real issue here is that you can download music for a small fee but you loose the artwork and lyrics booklets along with the cd and case itself, but if you download comics, all you loose is the paper book itself Besides, if you can download comics from a free site, then the copyright holders of said comics don't get the money they'd recieve from license deals with other publishers (In the case of GI Joe, Hasbro wouldn't get the money they get from IDW for the TPB's if you could just download free scans of the comics) |

Actually, the CD vs Comics theory holds up just well since there are rare CD's that go up in price over the years just like comics and just like comics there are CD's that only go down in value too

Are there really that many CDs from the 1990's that cost 10 times their initial value? I'm not trying to create an argument, i honestly don't know... |

I've been trying to collect the Joe comics as I find them. And that's all I really used the site for, to fill in the gaps of the issues I lack.
Capitalism = :(

All these issues would be solved if the comics industry could figure out a way to produce and sell them for cheaper.
There's so many books I want to read, I just can't cause can't afford to. And I'm not going to drop $25 bucks on a TPB without knowing if it really is something I'd like. The site, I was able to read a couple of the Young Avengers stuff and it interested me enough that I'll be looking for the TPBs. Same with Ellis' Nextwave. But without being able to "sample" on the site, I wouldn't have bothered because didn't want to waste the money on stuff potentially wouldn't like.

I'm fortunate that I have a library that stocks a lot of graphic novels.
You guys might want to consider Sequential Swap, too. It's a website that facilitates swapping of TPBs/graphic novels among its members. Easy way to stretch your dollars.

What makes this Sequential Swap legal, but HTML was not? Each have only one original buyer that contributes to the sales of the company/creator. After that, the TPB can be viewed by 100 people that didn't contribute. Same with a library. It's been bought once (the library copy) and then can be viewed by 100 people that don't contribute. So what is so wrong with an online viewing library?
