Ok, I came across this article by USA Today interviewing Nicholas Sparks about his lastest novel, The Last Song. And he actually had the arrogance and audacity to compare himself to the great Greek Tragedians, Hemingway and Shakespeare while ridiculing Cormac McCarthy.
Ok, say what you want about his books. Maybe you loved them, maybe you hated them. I'm not a fan. But when a writer of cheesy romances (or "love stories" as he calls them) compares himself to the greatest literary writers in history, he's obviously a self-deluding, ego-maniacal douchebag. Hallmark cards make Sparks look like a poet at best. But to call McCarthy's Blood Meridian "the most pulpy, overwrought, melodramatic cowboy vs. Indians story ever written" is a clear indicator that this dumbass has no understanding--much less an appreciation--for literature. And then he actually compares his own work to A Farewell to Arms! Are you shitting me? This guy wrote Nights in Rodanthe for god's sake. A trite melodrama about a beautiful woman and uber handsome surgeon that make love during a hurricane in a beach house that somehow manages to avoid total and utter destruction. Not to mention the grossly sentimental and contrived ending where Richard Gere's character dies a most tragic death while--of all things of course--trying to save medical supplies for children of a third world country where he so generously donates his professional services. And then of course the film ends with the most implausbile but predictable sighting of the wild ponies running down the coastline. Oh my god, the ponies! The ponies! This guy is not an artist. He is a mass producer of soft porn for teenage girls. Nicholas Sparks, Miley Cyrus share a 'Last Song' love story - USATODAY.com |

[David Sedaris fans will understand]
"I thought for a moment before saying, “Oh.” Because that’s really something I can’t stand – when people refer to themselves as crazy. The truly crazy are labeled so on the grounds that they see nothing wrong with their behavior. They forge ahead, lighting fires in public buildings and defecating in frying pans without the slightest notion that they are out of step with the rest of society. That, to me, is crazy. Calling yourself crazy is not crazy, just obnoxious" |

Maybe he really does have some things in common with the greats he compared himself to. For example, he could have a severe case of consumption like Shakespeare, he might be trying to grow a beard like Hemmingway, or perhaps he believes in an ether filled geocentric universe like the Greeks.
Hope this makes someone else laugh, because I love the idea of a guy with TB, sitting inside a Greek temple, swilling booze, throwing a geocentric universe model at a mirror while yelling at his facial hair follicles to grow faster. |

I compare myself to a lot of people - but I am usually wrong too.
Wishful thinking is a beautiful thing, except that it usually when OTHER people start comparing you to others that it is usually correct. |

Wait, is this the guy who writes those love story books for young girls? What a sissy. He's no Larry Hama.

I'm just not gonna get that worked up about it. He apparently actually believes this line of colossal bullshit. Good for him. Self-delusion allows us all to go on, I suppose. In his case it also allows him to sleep on an enormous pile of money.

Personally I'm not a fan of any of his stories. I find all of them transparent and predictable (though maybe not quite as bad as Avatar). However, about 95% of the women I know or have met would agree with his statement and rather read his works than take a mere glance at Shakespeare or Hemingway.
I think the audacity and arrogance he shows to actually state this is ridiculous. |

All that money and movies being made from his books (up to 4 now right?) have gone to his head.
Just because you're popular doesn't mean you're good.
