An IOL is an inner-ocular lens. It is a synthetic lens which is implanted into your eye to replace the current lens. In most cases it will correct for a fair amount of astigmatism. It's the same procedure done for cataract patients only you'll never need to have the surgery when you're older. Look into it if you're serious about corrective surgery.
I've been wearing glasses since the 2nd grade. They are pretty much Coke bottle glasses. LOL! I was so glad to finally wear contacts, but the contacts I have are always special order and I was pretty much pushing the limits of the contacts as well. Only a few manufacturers even make contacts in my prescription. My advice to anyone considering surgery is to don't cheap out. Find the person in your area that is the most experienced and the most knowledgable. I have a friend who has really bad night vision due to complications from Lasik. Others I know are just fine. Understand your own personal risks from a good doctor to really know if you are more susceptible to complications from Lasik. Get 2nd opinions if you need to. |

Great thread guys.
I am also thinking of it, but get really weird when people touch my eyes. Do they give you any type of sedative or medication to relax you? Is the procedure itself painful? I'm just worried that this sensitivity to people touching my eyes will prevent me from getting it done. Thank you all very much in advance for this thread, especially you Ruckus! |

I was scared to death when I had my lasik done. I went in thinking, "I can see good enough with contacts, why am I doing something that could potentially hurt my eyes?" But our insurance at work paid for it and lots of my coworkers had it done and swore by it. Then, an announcement came that our insurance would change on June 1, so I took a leap and went to the eye doctor, found out I was a candidate, and went in for surgery on May 29 or 30 (can't remember the exact date). Because I got in before the insurance change, I only paid $100 out of pocket, whereas I think the procedure would have been about $1500 an eye, I think. Not more than that.
I went in for surgery on day 1, and it took about 45 mins to an hour from the time I got to the clinic until the time I was discharged. It was a little freaky because I did go blind in each eye for approximately 15 seconds, but this is due to them sucking the eyeball up into a retractor device in order to use the laser, so it was expected. They gave me valium which really helped take the edge off. I went home and they gave me a sleeping pill to take and I could already tell a difference in my eyesight before I went to sleep. Woke up that afternoon wearing the mask they gave me (you have to sleep with goggles for about a week so you don't scratch your eyes). I was off work on day 2 and could tell a huge difference, and then went back to work on day 3. It took about 2 weeks for my eyes to fully adjust, and I also had to take eye drops for about 7 days. I do see halos around street lights, but my night driving is not affected. Also, I do not have a problem with dry eyes as has been reported with some who have had lasik, so I rarely use eyedrops. Last time I had my eyes checked, I think I was slightly better than 20/20. I love it, and as I stated before, I'm still amazed at how I can wake up and see from the time I open my eyes. It's been almost 3 years and sometimes I STILL wake up and reach for my glasses out of habit!

Whoah, reading all that makes me realize how much I take my good vision for granted...I think I'd find wearing glasses or contacts somewhat bothersome.
Not for nothing, but I remember some dateline or 20/20 show about Lasik and all the risks involved...they had people talking about how their vision wasn't that bad before, and after Lasik they were practically legaly blind or just really visually impaired...It's something like 20% of people who experience this, that's pretty scary...you may not be in that that percentile, but then you just might...kinda Russian Roullete'ish...

Oh, that's right. Thanks. My eye doctor actually recommended I try this before Lasik although she felt I was a good candidate for Lasik. I have been really patient to see what the best thing for me would be. I have such bad eyesight. I had one doctor warn me not to engage in any activity where I might get hit in the back of the head. My eyeballs are so far out of shape that my retinal nerves are strained. I could tear them if I ever get a really sharp blow to the back of the head. So, I don't do things like paintball or racquetball or boxing.

I've also worn glasses since the 2nd grade, and my lenses are also coke bottles. my contact prescription is -9.5 in one eye -9.75 in the other, if they reach 10 i will have no choice but to either wear contacts or get surgery because they cant make lenses that thick for glasses. My uncle had lasik done years ago, and has had perfect vision since then with no issues at all.

BEST decision I ever made.
I feel guilty now when I wake up and not even think about seeing clearly. It is a great feeling to wake up and see the clock without getting my glasses to check it. |

I would love to get the surgery, but i worry about that error margin. I'm not really sure about what my prescription is, but i know i don't need multifocals, and my lenses are pretty thin, plastic things. I can see perfectly w/o glasses up to about two feet away, then reading becomes impossible but i can still see general things well up to about 10 feet. With my glasses, i think im 20/10 or so. I can read small print from reasonable distance. I would love to be glasses free...i've been wearing them so long it's almost hard to imagine being able to function without them.
