aikido isnt really at all like kempo or kungfu as it was suggested here somewhere (i mean it shares some technical aspects...but really, upon penetrating into it....it differs drasticaly) , its derived from aikijujutsu which has its waaaaay back origins in the related chinese discipline of chin-na, which spurred the early forms of yawara and oshikiuchi which eventualy become aikijujutsu, master ueshiba, an aikijuka, had a spiritual enlightenment and wanted to soften up aikijutsu and apply his newly acquired omotto kyo shinto beliefs to his art and thus he created what would become aikido, all the energy manipulation and unbalancing of aikijujutsu without the realy rough stuff.(i teach and study aikijujustu...it can be quite brutal which contradicts aikidos "ahimsa" or non violent philosophy)
aikido is IMHO a spiritual path and a system of self defense rather than a "martial" (meant for war) art. but in capable and committed hands it can be quite effective. you will learn blocks, locks, pins, throws, unbalancing, dynamic movement, proper breathing, mental clarity and focus, good stuff all in all...and in most aiki dojo you will learn to use the boken, hanbo, jo and bo staff, and learn some gun and knife defense. its pretty cool and most aiki sensei are typicaly given to some type of spirituality i mean its the "way of spiritual harmony" ai= harmony ki= energy/spirit do=way typicaly anything ending in do rather than jutsu is going to be more sport and/or self defense oriented and likely evolved from more classical forms that actualy existed on the battlefields of old and evolved for our modern needs/recreation/development. hope this helps you with that decision. |

I took taekwondo when I was younger at Riverbend Martial arts under Master David Campbell, I used to love it but I never got my black. Martial arts are awesome and a really great form of exercise and for choosing a dojang it's all personal choice and preferance. My school was in a close vicinity to my house and the instructor never made anyone feel weak nor inferior and took time out to make bonds with all of his students. I earned a few trophies and was part of our demo team, but I'd visit a few schools first and see what fits you best. We also had a Shoryn-ryu karate, akido, tang su do, judo, and tiger kung fu schools around at the time but I just really enjoyed TKD! Good luck finding a studio ;)
