Outside the usual suspects, Steven Pressfield is very good at historical fiction. His "Gates of Fire" is a must read and "Tides of War" is very good as well. Haven't had the chance to read more of his stuff though.

CS Lewis' entire catalogue.
When I'm looking for something light, Grisham. Really enjoy the historical/sociological books by Rodney Stark One of my all-time favorite books is The Man Who Was Thursday, by GK Chesterton - trippy, crazy, and amazing! His "Father Brown" books are great as well. I like F Scott Fitzgerald's work, too.

Absolutely one of my favorite authors. I've seen him several times, met him and was actually invited to dinner with him. Like many, I first heard of him on NPR and have enjoyed every minute of him since then. Reading his books is a pleasure, but listening to he and his sister on the audio versions is the best.
Generally, neither am I. I read a lot of history. There is almost nothing better than sitting down with a National Geographic, except for maybe sitting down with a volume of the encyclopedia. (There has to be a bathroom joke or ten in there some where.) |

I don't read a lot of fiction these days. Used to read a lot of fiction when I was younger (I was a sucker for anything written by Stephen King and Nick Hornby), but my current preference is non-fiction material that revolve around historical, political, military, and cognitive science topics.
Some of my favourite writers, off the top of my head:
I know my list looks a little weird: Chomsky and Ferguson would probably be distressed to find themselves on the same "favourite writers" list since they represent opposite ends of the ideological spectrum, and Chomsky and Pinker would probably find it passing strange that they're on the same list given that their respective theories on the origin of human language development contradict each other, but what can I say, I like studying topics from multiple perspectives. Tolkien will always be a favorite for introducing a wee little Black Llama to the world of fantasy.
Other favorites itclude: Jim Butcher George R.R. Martin R.A. Salvatore Neil Gaiman Terry Pratchett Weis & Hickman (anything Dragonlance) Beyond that, I will generally give everything the page 69 test at the book store. I have read a LOT of fantasy and sci-fi series. I think we need to start a Hisstank book exchange.

I love all things Tolkien. I've always enjoyed Hemingway as well.
