As for weird weapons, you really gotta hand it to the Germans. They blended crazy and brilliant into one package. They invented, among other things, the first automatic rifle, the first helicopter, and remote controlled robotic warfare... Some of the really wacky stuff included an ultra-sonic weapon and somethign I can only describe as a "tornado cannon". Yes, it actually shot tornados at aircraft, and it actually did work to an extent. |

The "Bat Bomb" is my absolute favorite. It was an American Idea that actually made it to the testing stage. They took bats and attached tiny incendiary devices with timers to them. The bats were then placed in large canisters where they hung upside down like they would normally sleep. The bombs were designed to be dropped into Japanese villages that wee primarily constructed of wood and paper. When the the bomb opened the bats would fly out and immediately take shelter in attics and other accessible parts of structures. When the timers went off the whole place would burn to the ground. It worked great in tests, but was made obsolete by the H-bomb.

There was a mini-jet called the Goblin that the US Air force was developing during WWII. The problem was that allied fighters didn't have the range to stay with the long range bombers which left the bombers with no defense against german fighters. So, a small jet fighter, the Goblin, was designed to be carried inside the bombers bomb bay and deployed to counterattack german fighters. It was armed with 4 machine guns and folding wings and was intended to be launched from the bomb bay, fly out to attack enemy aircraft, then fly back to the bomber and use a built-in hook to latch on to a special trapeze and be pulled back into the bomber. The Goblin was built and tested, as these pics show, but the project was cancelled after long range fighters capable of staying with the bombers were developed.

Like many of you I am a very big fan of the Discovery and History channels and their affiliates. Particularly the Military Channels. One of the interesting topics for me are the strange weapons that were on the drawing boards during WWII and subsequently the cold war. Some even made it as far as the testing stages.
For those who watch these shows, what is your favorite weird, strange or amazing weapon that was never developed. My favorites are the amazing Avro Arrow,The Canadian Superfighter that was canceled for mysterious reasons. The performance of this plane was unparalleled with a top speed of Mach 3 plus. Also, the XB-70 Valkyrie the Mach 3 plus, high altitude bomber. The look of these planes are futuristic even for today. Also there is this weird contraption like a flying, portable gun station developed by Convair. I don't know about you guys, but I think this would've been something the guys from HASBRO could've designed for the Joes. Read about it here: Google Image Result for http://www.aviastar.org/foto/convair-49.jpg i also see some skyhawk there too |

That was definitely a time when man was keeping one another on his toes.. There were some crazy designs and break through during that time.... that is to say the least. Here is also a description of Tesla's "Peace Ray"(Never produced) : [The nozzle would] send concentrated beams of particles through the free air, of such tremendous energy that they will bring down a fleet of 10,000 enemy airplanes at a distance of 200 miles from a defending nation's border and will cause armies to drop dead in their tracks.[87] The weapon could be used against ground based infantry or for antiaircraft purposes.[88] Tesla tried to interest the US War Department in the device.[89] He also offered this invention to European countries.[90] None of the governments purchased a contract to build the device. He was unable to act on his plans.[91] No Pic though. Source: Wiki, yeah go figure.
