strengthen your back muscles (sit-ups,etc)
wear more supportive shoes. if you need a current solution.. go to walmart.. there's a heating patch called "salon pas" it works wonders.

I have a couple of slipped discs and it can suck sometimes! I find alternating a cold pack and a heating pad helps a lot. It can take a few days to get better so be sure to rest it as much as you can for a few days. After that, start walking and get it moving as the increased blood flow will help. If it is REALLY bad, a steroid shot or epidural from your doctor will help. Feel better!

dealt with this a lot lately, upper and lower. time and ibuprofen seems to be the only cure, although physical therapy and/or massages help, too. sleeping was always the worst part for me.

If you have stronger abs, it actually helps take the pressure off of your lower back. Strengthening core muscles will also improve posture and reduce the possibility of back pain. Now I need to practice what I preach...

if this is something that's acute, you don't want to use heat. it's going to increase the blood flow to the area and that's going to increase the swelling which is going to cause more pain. the heat feels better at first and it does relax the muscles, but you pay for it later. you gotta go with ice or cold packs. that will reduce the inflammation and decrease the pain.
also, i'd recommend going to see your chiropractor like xhairs suggested. if they're a good doc, they won't just crack your back and get you out the door. they should do a good history and exam and recommend some decent therapies in addition to the adjustment (such as stretches, rehab exercises, anti-inflammatory supplements, etc).

I stopped doing stomach exercises for a while and I hurt my back when I strained it. Ab exercises, when done right, actually strengthen the lower back as well as the abs, and this is why it can help lower back problems. Muscle groups always work in pairs. If you exercise your abs incorrectly you can actually hurt your back more. |

Depends on what is messed up, but if it is lower back pain, you might be out of alignment. Perhaps you've got muscle spasms which are a result of being out of alignment. Probably best to see a physiotherapist to help work it out.
