I got to about Book 5 or 6 and it was just dragging and I lost interest. Didn't find his writing style all that great. Good but nothing that grabbed me and held me.
I loved Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, but after I had got caught up on all the books and had to wait years for the next one I lost interest. Getting back into such a thick work was hard. I think things like Wheel of Time and Sword of Truth work better when reading back to back or not much time between 'em. Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow & Thorn is awesome. My only critique is that he did not go far enough in that his main hero is simply too heroic. He has three women all content to bed him at the same time. He quickly became a super-fighter and wizard. Sometimes, it's not a question of whether he can overcome his challenges, rather, it's just reading how he overcomes them. That is to say, his character does not generate emphaty from the reader. |

I read the Sword of Truth series pretty consistently as they were coming out until the 6th book, but I didn't pick it up and finish until last winter. Some individual books I could've done without, but the story as a whole is pretty good. My brother was telling me that he picked it up last summer because he had nothing else to read and ended up becoming a huge fan.

Was never a big Goodkind or Robert Jordan fan. I love me some 'high fantasy' but most of their stuff drove me nuts.
You want some really REALLY good fantasy? George R. R. Martin, start with A Game of Thrones. If you want some lighter fantasy, check out anything with DRAGONLANCE and WEIS & HICKMAN on the cover.

I didn't like Song of Fire and Ice from Martin.
Read the first book, liked it. Started the 2nd book, got bored. Moved on. I never liked Rand al'Thor. Perrin Aybarra and Mat Cauthon were better and more interesting characters.

I actually have George Martin's "A Game of Thrones" on my shelf - I had forgotten that someone had given that to me. |

I like Robert Jordan and Wheel of Time as well, because it tried to also incorporate eastern-philosphy into high-fantasy, kinda like how Matrix did with the action flick. So Jordan's take on the Hero cycle is sufficiently different so as to set him apart from the pack.
My only critique is that he did not go far enough in that his main hero is simply too heroic. He has three women all content to bed him at the same time. He quickly became a super-fighter and wizard. I am so confused by your eclectic base of knowledge...makes me...want to...slap a smurf with .....a book on prose. |

I was a big Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms fan as well back in the day.
Only ones I read now are Salvatore's Drizzt novels.

Personally I love GRRM, it's very dark fantasy but not everyone agrees..... Gah, that drives me nuts (not you not liking it) not finishing a series of books. If I get through book 1, I will generally HAVE to finish everything else. There has only been 1 exception to this rule. Tad Williams - Otherland. I read the first 2 books, I was literally in tears of boredom during book 3.
