So here's the deal. Five years of hard work for the financial company I work for, with my birthday around the corner. Guess what my company is giving me for my birthday?....Yep...Layoff.
"We regret to inform you that we're going to close a crapload of offices and your office is included." Now I have to look for a job. Looking for a job is the equivalent of dating to me. You never know what you're gonna get and sometimes have to go through the really bad ones to find the good ones. I mean....REALLY???....They couldn't put me in another office? But i'm more than welcome to work in the new division they're creating. I just have to apply for it; which, in fact, is a crappy position that I don't want. The new position is pretty much the worst part of my current job as the sole purpose of employment. What a stink. Please pray for me guys. The building I work in is only one story, so the windows are useless...

That sucks. My company laid off me and another guy (the 2 that had been there the longest) "for a few months" and when the "few months" were over we found out we'd been replaced by some younger, part-time guys they could pay less and won't be eligible for insurance and all that for a year. Nice, huh? But yeah, good luck man!

good luck. I was out of work myself for a spell. Stay positive...if you have to fake being positive in an interview...then fake it. Things will turn around...the cream always rises to the top...in my case, I was a floater..so better lucky than good sometimes.
I eventually got an interview and was told later that they actually interviewed 32 other people for that job. So things can and will turn out for the best...who knows you may land a better job that you really enjoy going to everyday |

well for what it's worth...since you've been there five years you'd more than likely get unemployment right out of the gate and probably decent pay. I'd be applying for it right away. Unless they are giving you severance pay or something then it may be different I don't know. and right now with the economy they are giving unemployment extensions beyond what you are approved for so that should buy you time to look for a job you really want. I understand what you mean though...I hate interviewing for new jobs...some ask you trick questions or irrelevant stuff like "where do you wanna be in 8 years?" causes so much anxiety. but anyway...if you were there 5 years and being at a financial company I'm sure with your qualifications and background you'll land an even better job. and sometimes the window to the world might just be the front door?

I have been laid off my last 4 jobs.
But the sun seams to be rising over here. And California has so many resources (like it or not) because of the money being dumped into green jobs, that I can't see why they won't be leading the way with all that sunlight, and international shipping shores, and turbine energy, and ready labor. Keep you head up.... Americans have went through it before. You should watch that History channel special "America, the story of us" It made me realize things could be worse... and will get better |

I feel your pain man,I recently got suspended from my job for a year, forcing me to take these real crappy temp warehouse jobs. What makes things worst,I found out that my suspension wasnt mandatory or even valid. The guy who "suspended" me did so because he had something personal against me. From what someone at the company told me,my project manager has always disliked me(for whatever reason) and that my suspension was not valid and he also allowed other people to work who was guilty of the same exact "violation" I got suspended for, including his own brother who also works for the company. Im seriously considering filing a lawsuit against that company.

Thanks for all the encouraging words! Deep down, I know that things are open and something better is in the future. It's just the initial loss that really sucks. I really appreciate all the kind words. You guys don't know how much it means to me. Hearing you guys has really helped to lift my spirit. I know that things will be better. The world is my oyster right now. I just need to get my chrome faceplate and blue dress uniform. Anyone want to join my legion? lol
