I have a daughter (only child) who is about to get her 15 month shots on Thursday. I have to tell you I'm scared and I'm wondering if I should cancel. After hearing things on TV and the Internet, it seems many people believe that the 15 month vaccines lead to autism. I have read and heard many stories where a child is fine and then after the 15 month shots, they turn into a different person. Many people believe that the CDC and drug companies are just covering it up over the all mighty dollar. I don't know what to do. I won't be able to live with myself if I take her for the shots and she ends up getting autism. Are these shots really necessary?
If anyone has any info or knows anything that can help me come to a good decision, please let me know.

talk with your pediatrician about your concerns. As a parent I thought about that same stuff (and that close to 10yrs ago) but my boy was fully vaccinated.

Short answer: There are no legitimate studies that show vaccines lead to autisum.
Long answer gets a lot more complicated, but basically, the only legit study that was shown as the banner study that linked autism to vaccines was done by a guy who later admitted that the testing group was bogus. His test group was something like 90% austistic kids, which he hid in his original findings. So basically every kid who got a vaccine in his study also developed autism, shocker there. But despite that study being bogus and no direct evidence linking the two. It's still your decision as a parent and you shouldn't let anyone try and force you to have something injected into your child. Keep researching and learning about the subject though to make an informed decision, and just don't take the word of the husband of a CNM EDIT: Here's the wiki on the state of the study: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMR_vaccine_controversy Last edited by Roshan; 04-06-2010 at 07:29 PM.. |

People can post anything, so thats why I thought I'd ask some Tankers what there take on this is.

What Roshan said, and here's a piece from the NYTimes about how this fear of vaccines has lead to a dramatic upswing in measles. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/22/he...tml?_r=1&fta=y

Well, I'm not going to reference every article that goes every way, but as stated above, simply no.
The cause for concern was/is the trace amounts of mercury present in many vaccines to improve their efficacy. No large scale, controlled study has shown any sort of link between the two. In fact, the chance that a child will contract a potentially fatal disease if they are not vaccinated, is approximately 2-3 times that that they will develop autism. If your really interested in a more long-winded detailed explaination, I can dig out my notes on it, but that's the general summary. |

I know that the news was also recently covering this a lot lately because there was a big medical panel that closed the debate and said "no link" But you have parents of autistic children fighting this tooth and nail. but at least it's YOUR decision to make!

I'm not a doctor and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but, I'm of the belief that autism is over-diagnosed, as a way for people to justify that their kid may not be developing at a rate they expect, compared to themselves at that age or other children of the same age.
It's easy for a doctor to diagnosis, so, as a good parent, now you'll have to buy that prescription, or book that extra doctor visit. Do doctors get kick backs from the drug companies that they write prescriptions for? I think so. I don't feel vaccines are the problem, but I would space out the vaccines as much as possible. That's what I plan on doing with my son. Just my opinion. |
