I think people should bid what they are willing to pay and be done with it.
Of course I do Hate it when a shill bidder manages to bump me up to my max price and leave hanging with the auction. |

No. I started to bid at the end of auctions because I didn't like having new ebayers raise the price until they either figured out my highest amount or gave up. Its like painting a target and daring someone to hit it.
I probably bid on 10% of what I actually watch. I only bid once - my highest bid for what I'm willing to pay and don't base it on what the current amount is. If something goes out of range while I'm watching I just delete it and keep on looking. |

I think proxy bidding eliminated the worst of the sniping... I usually put in small bids at first to give me time to think if I really want to pay big bucks for an item...
But now that you're not being beat by a dollar in the last couple seconds I don't think sniping is as bad anymore. If someone puts in a high max bid a the last second just to make sure they only pay a bit more then the next highest bidder... that's a valid strategy. I am the type who is liable to snipe you with two seconds left to go wowohooooo

Two major forseeable problems with the suggestion here:
1) the seller (or his friend) could keep driving up the price 'at the last minute' until someone else came in with an offer deamed high enough for them to make a profit off 2) sniping just moves to the 30 seconds before the 5 minute cutoff, not removing the problem, just shifting the time of it. |

I'm relieved to be done with ebay. It's ridiculously rare for me to bid on an auction there. Buy It Nows, but not auctions.
I'm a sniper. I generally just enter the maximum amount I'd pay for an item in the last five to ten seconds. Even doing that I've been outsniped. If it ain't meant to be, it ain't meant to be.

No.
Auction sniping has contributed greatly to my collection. I like it, and it works about 85% of the time. I watch it, bide my time... if the price goes to high, I let it go... if it stays low, I snipe. And if I'm really into it I'll watch the auction live and bid in the last few seconds rather than use a snipe site. It's exciting! Now if I can only get my hands on a 'Rolling thunder' for a decent price... |

Nope, I am a sniper. It's the nature of the business. Fair or not it's the way ot is. Besides, you're supposed to bid your max ammount you'd be willing to spend. If someone out bids you then you would have lost anyway.
For those who want to avoid sniping, place a higher bid. I've been sniped and it sucks. But I've changed the way I bid and now I usually win my auctions. |
