I am a man of few words and spend most of my time here as a lurker, but this is something I feel very strongly about, so please take the time to read.
The 'Penny Arcade' Co-Creators - The 2010 TIME 100 Poll - TIME This is a poll of the 100 most influential people on 2010, and the creators of Penny Arcade are in the running this year. For those not familiar with Penny Arcade, it is a webcomic that primarily focuses on video games and gaming culture, but they are so much more then that as well. A few years ago, after becoming more and more disappointed with the current press based gaming expos, they decided to start there own that was fan based, called Penny Arcade Expo, or PAX, with game developer involvement. it has become essentially the SDCC of the gaming industry at this point, but more fan oriented. But most importantly is Child's Play. After the columbine shooters the media focused on the fact that the killers were gamers, and painted anyone who plays video games, and especially violent video games as killers waiting to happen. In answer to this, to show what kind of people gamers really are they started a charity. a charity to raise money for Children's Hospitals. They specifically raise money to buy video games, toys, and other things to make a child's stay in the hospital more enjoyable. it started as a charity for the Seattle Childrens Hospital closest to them, but has now spread to 70 hospitals world wide and raised almost 2 million dollars last christmas. Please take the time to vote for them, if you are a gamer, a geek, or a parent who has had a child in the hospital or might, please vote to get these guys the recognition they deserve. And come Christmas time please donate to Childs Play every year if you can. www.childsplaycharity.org http://www.paxsite.com/paxprime/index.php Penny Arcade - Penny Arcade (by Erika Moen)

I can't stand Tycho (whatever his real name is, don't really pay attention or care). All his front page posts make me want to strangle him. Arrogant, pretentious, etc...
Love the comics. They do good things, no doubt about it. But Top 100 influential people in the world for 2010? Nope. Didn't they get ranked in this poll last year? Or was it another one?

I always thought that Jerry was writing as the Tycho character.
That the front page or news post was a way for him to express him self. Don't know if they got recognition before on that scale or not but for the Childs Play charity (great work) and for the PAX that deserves some major recognition. If those events continue to grow at the rate they currently are then they will soon become major forces. That's pretty impressive looking at where they came from.

It's definately very impressive considering started as a web strip.
But I don't think their impact extends beyond the gamer community, which is still relatively small overall.

Wish I could support you on this Harkiri, but not for top 100 in the world. Top 100 in the country for the year probably. But there should be at most 5-10 coming out of the US if you're doing a proper top 100 and I just can't see them jumping up to that echelon.
This is not to say they don't do some amazing stuff with their show and their charities. |
