Since I get up at the crack of dawn in the morning i thought id go ahead and watch the shuttle launch this morning. In 30 years i dont think ive ever watched one. So im watching this thing go up it kind of looked like it went up into space and decided to bust a U-turn. It looked like the thing was coming back down to the ground. Anyone know if they made it or if they decided to turn cause they forgot their space suits or something? Maybe it just the angle i was viewing it from. Im on the west coast of florida. From here it looked like the shuttle went up and came back down.

It might have been the seperation of the SRB's or main fuel tank you seen falling back down.

Hey man, yeah I watched it too and I'm also in Sarasota and I'm used to watching them.
What you end up seeing is first the booster drops off and then once they reach orbit it gives the illusion that the shuttle is moving down or sometimes backward. You are actually seeing them in outer space at that point. It certainly was a spectacular launch though, the smoke trail was AWESOME especially being illuminated by the morning sun and the moon at the same time. One thing I will say though is after it got into orbit I've never seen it leave such a huge condensation trail like that it was really amazing to watch, looked like it was treading water or something.
