I've suffered from depression for a large part of my life. It took a long time to recognize this, and then understand how it affected my life, and finally to live with it. I've taken several different anti-depressants and gave up on finding happiness in a daily pill. I got most of the side effects, none of the benefits. I've been doing very well for the last two years, I believe. Now, I'm not a very personable or overly pleasant person to begin with, but I respect most people and generally keep my opinions to myself, unless asked. But I feel my general attitude towards life has made some great progress. My largest complaint at the moment is that I don't enjoy my job; I'm a computer drafter currently, and while it's an interesting and mentally challenging job, I hate sitting on my ass behind a desk ALL DAY LONG. I was a mechanic in and out of the Army, and every other job I've had kept me on my feet and physically active, which I needed, because I cannot motivate myself to exercise regularly. I'm looking to go back to work as a civilian contractor overseas, but for the time being, I'm just going through the motions, because - what else can I do?
I'm trying to maintain a positive attitude, but the underwhelming day to day struggle to make ends meet has consistently kept my girlfriend of four years unhappy. Which greatly affects my mental attitude. I also have a very difficult time sleeping, which she should know and understand by this time, but she somehow manages to forget this every night when I'm ready to go to bed. I'm just trying to deal with some doldrums at present, and wondered what you do to keep a positive attitude.

What do you draft?
I'm an architect and a large part of my day is spent using AutoCAD and Revit. Honestly, my way of dealing with my depression is just to suck it up and make things work. I've had a roommate with it and she'd just lay around all day doing nothing and blame her depression. Sorry, doesn't work. You're in control and it's up to you to put one foot in front of the other and move on. I've also been told I'm not very compassionate. So just ignore me. So back to drafting...

Independant contracting doesn't sound too bad. I hear the government pays a good amount (with a slight risk of 'splosions) and you'd at least get outside in the sun.
Thing is if pills ain't helping then it might not be chemical. You might just need a major change in your life. Studying Buhddism (don't laugh) also might be a good thing, with its focus on inner harmony. |

Me? I go buy toys, watch 80's cartoons and make custom action figures.. and if that don't do it I go hang out in Barnes N Noble for a few hours drinking a Chai Tea Latte ... going for a nice drive helps too.
Basically you just gotta find something to get the old passion going again.. and sometimes that means connecting to your old passions to find new ones. but I hear you, the past two years have been a difficult struggle for me financially too and so far it aint looking any better.

Got a pet?
Nice thing about 'em is they love you unconditionally and won't judge you. I have a bad day, just a couple minutes of playing with my cat helps the mood considerably. I hate cats though. Just not mine. But seriously. My cats been the one constant in my life for the last 12 years.
