My local TRU is hiring for various positions...normally I would never work at such a place, but with the economy and all a little extra cash wont hurt.
Plus its literally right behind my gym where I go everyday anyway. If anything I'm thinking I can atleast get a good discount on SW and the DCU/Marvel stuff... Anyone ever work there before? I'm assuming the pay is'nt much to talk about, but what is the discount like?? |

Associate discount is 10% which depending on what the sales tax is in NJ, may just make your purchases come to just under retail price.
Get ready to ask every customer if they want a rewards card, credit card, to sign up for birthday club, if they need batteries, a buyer protection plan, yadda yadda yadda. |

The discount will not be much - 10 or 15 percent. Hardly seems worth it to me. In many cases, there is not really much of a markup on toys, so they can't discount them that much. I worked at TRU about 10 years ago during the holiday season. I liked it and found it to be a fun environment, but the pay is lousy.

My buddy worked there seasonally last year. He hated it, but it was job 2, so he was already tired and crabby before he got there.
Don't know what he made or if he was going to get a discount. He was scrambling to pay important things and not buying toys heavily back then. |

Years ago I worked at one for the holidays. They were not in good shape. Out of 70 employees only two were full time. Everything was broken or about to break like the scanning guns and the baler. They had no working security cameras and I'm pretty sure the door alarms were not functional. It closed a month after I started. On the plus side with no alarms or cameras everything was pretty much free.

I tried retail once - couldn't do it again - but I am often tempted to do the TRU thing.
But the first time some dumb parent asked me something I would be getting fired. |

You might actually know about the toys you sell - you are probably overqualified and they won't hire you.

Be prepared for an initial group interview with about 3-5 other people who also want a job. It was the MOST awkward and embarrassing thing I have ever been through to get a job.
