I was brought up calling soda "soda", but I've lived and visited in several different places where it's called different things. It seems like in the U. S., the further north you go, the more you hear "pop", while the further south you go, everything becomes "Coke", even if it's Pepsi. In the middle is a transitional zone where it's "soda" or "soda pop". What do you call it?

I remember the days that after a good day of work dad would ask if we then wanted to get a pop. Saying yes, he thumped us on the head, then offered to buy us a soda.
Can't wait to do it with my kids. |

Most people in Canada that I talk to call it Pop. My travels in the States have introduced me to the term soda. When I was a server in a restaurant in Canada I had a man at a table order a "Coke", when I brought him his Coke, he told me that he wanted the "Orange one". This baffled me but after asking for ID when he ordered alcohol, I saw that he had a licence from Kentucky.... I then believed that "Coke" was a generic slang for soda/pop depending on where you were from.

This right here. I never heard anyone call it soda back home in Toronto until I worked with a guy who was born and raised American. However, The Outsiders was one of my favourite books as a kid, so I suppose I should've known that before I met my old co-worker. There's a character in that book called Soda or Sodapop.
