I grew up in southeast Iowa, so I think I was that "transitional area" where it was predominantly "pop", though I recall "coke" was a pretty common in my mom's side of the family.

And my mother cannot STAND sweet tea :p
Around here, she has to explicitly order "unsweet tea"

Always been "Coke" even though I prefer Pepsi
10% of the time, the waitress will tell me they only serve Pepsi products. That's when I change my order to a Mountain Dew ;)

Im in Maine. We only call is Soda, that's all Ive EVER heard. And more than that, brand specific, i.e., youre in a car with a bunch of people. You pull into a Cumbys and this is the ensuing conversation:
"You want anything?" "Yeah, a soda. Pepsi!" or "Yeah, a soda. Mt. Dew!" etc. |

Honestly, I've heard everything except "Coke" for anything other than Coca-Cola. So it makes no difference to me unless you call it Coke.

That map is really interesting, glad you posted it, especially when you look at Alaska & Nevada. Everywhere else it appears to be somewhat similiar to that specific region. But in Alaska & Nevada it seems to be a little of everything in those places.
