Another thread is talking about who in Marvel can equal the DC trinity. Here's some food for thought on a similar subject: How will GI Joe and Transformers stand in pop culture 20 years from now? When I was a kid, Superman and Batman were cultural icons, and had been around for 50 or 60 years. All of the Marvel guys (with the exception of Captain America and the Sub Mariner) had been around for 20 years, and were just starting to turn the corner as icons. Star Wars was great, but was all but forgotten at the time (this was 1986-1992. ROTJ was over, and Lucas was wasting his time on stuff like Howard the Duck). Now, 2010, Star Wars & Spiderman are cultural icons. Where will GI Joe and Transformers be in another 10-20 years. Before Michael Bay, Transformers were just a toy line. Could the film series that began with "Rise of Cobra," reguardless of what you thought of the movie, do for GI Joe what the film series has done for Transformers? Will we view Snake Eyes and Optimus Prime like we view Darth Vader, Superman and Spiderman now? I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case, and I know I hope it is. What do you guys think?

No. Won't happen.
Would like to think it'll happen, but Joe will never approach the level of Star Wars or attain a cultural awareness of Hulk, Captain America, Spider-Man, Batman and Superman. It's because of the world today. All those things that attained that status did it years ago and just maintain it. Nothing new has come along, and probably won't, that will ever equal those.

I do think the brand "GI Joe" is an icon, but that dates back to the original 12" figures. I don't know, it's hard to tell what's gonna stick. I think they've got a shot.

Isn't Joe iconic now? Been around since 1964 IIRC yeah its taken different forms over the years but to me GI Joe is iconic. Joe had its hiatus too in the 90s just like Star Wars but SW never really went away, look at the number of members here. No it will be some time before this fades away.

GI JOE (in one form or other) ain't going nowhere. It won't ever be as big as Batman or StarWars but it'll always be there if you look for it. The Joe name, while not as popular, is still well known and respected since the 60's.
