I've noticed over the years in the Marvel and DC universes that New York seems to have a lot of Heroes hanging around than any other major City.
Spiderman, Fantastic 4, and even the X-Men are located in New York with the X-Men Mansion being in Upstate New York. Even the Avengers have a Emergency HQ located outside New York City. And Stark Tower in New York as well. So Just makes me wonder besides the other Cities that have Heroes that New York has been Chosen pretty much for a Super Hero Hub [Even Sarah Pezzini is a New York Cop who wields the Witchblade is there too!] what other major cities have the same amount of Heroes as New York or is it really the Super Hero Hub of the Comic Universe?

DC actually incorporates a bunch of fictional cities; Keystone, Metropolis, Gotham, Coast, Star, Central, St. Roch...there's plenty more. Some have been made into more-or-less analogues for real world city in characteristics and geography.

My biggest dilemma has always been, if Gotham City is supposed to be New York, what the hell is Metropolis supposed to be? I've always thought Metropolis was Chicago, and Smallville was in Kansas somewhere.

Marvel uses NY all the time because that is where the creators were when they 1st created the characters. Many consider NY to be the greatest city in the world. |

my problem is when you put superheros in a real world city they have to react to what happens in real life in that city. I read comics to get away from reality, I don't need them as a reminder of it.

In my opinion, it's because NY is one of the best-known cities in the U.S.: On the east coast, it's NY, Baltimore, Washington DC, Miami, and a few others- On the west coast it's San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, and a few others. It also makes it a lot easier to set up the background action and keep it consistent: For example, does it snow in metropolis? Are there heat waves, chances of, say, tidal waves, or drought? Setting up the backgroud city is vital for the action... otherwise superman would wind up capping a volcano on the island 2 miles outside of the city to the east, pushing back a glacer to the south, stopping an incoming tsunami coming in from the north... and other contradictory actions. That plus the fact that all of the artists in the US would naturally use New York, Chigago, etc as models for the background cities because they know it so well. Just like a tale set in england would most likely be set in or near london simply because that is the city best known around the world.

Don't forget that the PIT was in Staten Island! That's (technically) part of NYC as well.
Speaking as a resident, in addition to the reasons already listed for NYC;s prominence as a superhero hub, it's also because NY is so freaking huge. It literally has skyscraper canyons. Just think of Spider-Man in, say LA. There's not enough downtown area to make his form of locomotion viable anywhere else. |

The Punisher and Dardevil are based in New York as well, DD is based in Hell's Kitchen. |
