Anyone here have some suggestions for good p&p RPGs? I currently have a set of Shadowrun 4.0 books, and I'm looking to expand. Don't care what genre, fantasy, SciFi, horror... doesn't matter, just fun.
(Note - No Dungeons and Dragons. Yes, I've heard of it. ) Second part - Anyone tried Rogue Trader yet? It's a new record... two threads *started* by me in a day. |

I'm curious to see how many replies this gets. I wonder how the RPG market is doing as a whole in today's world.
I used to play Mutant Chronicles when i was in high school. A great setting. You might want to try Firefly is you are a fan of the show. I think it has one of the best game play dynamics of any game. Games using the cortex system, like firefly, and other games made by Eden Studios, like Buffy and Angel, both have very dynamic, narrative driven game play systems that take all the tedious dice statistics out of the game that bog down other systems like DnD.

Hmm... I might have to consider that if I can find the book cheap. Own the show and Serenity on DVD, never watched any of it, but I've heard great, and the setting would be fun. I'll make note of the system too.
Honestly, I still buy RPG books, but not from a game shop, I use Amazon, much cheaper. Local shop marks stuff up over coverprice, which is painful. (Rogue Trader coverprice is 59.99) |

I've only played d-20 modern with my best friend's neighbor. We were bored and we didn't take it seriously though he was just excited to have us over. It was pretty fun. I enjoy writing and have joined a few Online Historical RPGS as well as Superhero base though it's a bit hard.

I love Firefly, but have never played it(sounds interesting though). My favorite games were Rifts and Battletech/Mechwarrior. although battletech was more of a miniature game. but mechwarrior was a character game like what your looking for. Ive recently felt the need to try and play some of those games again, but i dont know anybody who plays them anymore...

Warhammer 40k has the dark heresy RPG that seems to be cranking out new product on a regular/semi-regular basis (a new rulebook called Rouge trader just came out) I've got a few of the manuals for the art and story bits but it's all much to confusing for me

I really miss good pencil and paper RPG -
As many did, I started out on Advanced Dungeons and Dragons - I have the guides for the 3rd Edition but it seemed pretty complex as opposed to the 2nd Edition that I grew up with. But aside from D and D I delved into Vampire the Masquerade, Hunter the Reckoning, Mage the Ascension and my personal favorite of the White Wolf Publishing - Werewolf the Apocolypse. I was thinking about trying some of the Star Wars RPGs if I ever got a table top group together - there is such a rich mythos to pull from and I think what makes it attractive is that the basics of the world is already in place - so you don't have to re-create the wheel when you are writing adventures. But until then the MMORPG is my crack. |
